old songs
If you go back to your old stuff, do you ever feel it is like finding an old photograph album or other links to your past where you sort of recognise yourself but there is something intangible or forgotten? I have just stumbled on an old CD of stuff I recorded aged 16/17 and it just brought back so many feelings of confused teenage years where I could express myself in a song far better than any other way.

I am sort of tempted to put a few up on IMP, but they are a little naive.

Yes, listening to my old songs is very much like looking at old photos. I sort of have mixed emotions about that. Songs and photos from the past reflect the good, the bad and the ugly! Strange lyrics, silly haircuts, era-specific music (disco, punk, etc)
songs of unrequited love and heartbreak, photos with friends we no longer have in our lives and other reminders of past triumphs and failures. But as ambivalent as I am about memory lane, there are some great lessons there and some inspiration as well.

Lately I've been considering going through my old external hard drives and exploring what's there and perhaps posting some things on IMP, just for the hell of it. I'm sure we would all love to hear your older material. There's nothing wrong with naivety. It's the privilege of the young and it's pure and beautiful. Sometimes it's fun to even remake an old song. It's like going iback in time and tuning up that instrument that was out of tune or changing that lyric that wasn't quite right. It can be very cathartic and satisfying.

Sometimes past songs remind us of art we created that can NEVER be recreated, updated or duplicated and that's what makes those artifacts so precious and special. They shouldn't be hidden in the drawer because they aren't modern or perfect. They should be celebrated and shared because they are real and authentic. They show how an artist evolves to be who they are today and how much progress they've made.

Do it Francesca, Joni Mitchell's way old music was recently discovered by accident by a dj who had interviewed her 50 years ago where she sang live at the radio station she did that as a younger woman and is now released and it is brilliant, so are you

carry on your music legacy here ,and do upload your singing thoughts and feelings

I always get something useful out of listening to my old stuff if i haven't hoid it for awhile. It's also a great way to deliver you back to the time you did it.

Francesca you can use your page to present any kind of personal glimpse of your art that is available nowhere else. I even keep my mp3 of an imitation of Carol Channing at the bottom of my page.

Might as well give those who stumble in as fans a bigger picture if they so desire to partake.

Thx Richard, I have been dealing with my fathers situation the last number of months he was fading over the last year and rapidly went downhill a week ago and passed away on the 8th of October, so been dealing with getting things in order, dealing with the funeral home arrangements, burial and executor duties. So really wont be around much for awhile. cheers to you all.

I recently found some old recordings, and, while I still liked the songs, my production was not that good, and my views had changed. They're fun to listen to, but I don't think I'll ever re-release them.

I've listened to your music, and like your songwriting a lot. And I get the feeling that you were probably a precocious writer. So, even if your songs were more naive back then, you should share them - it's fun to know where people have come from. And we can all relate to the confusion of being a teen.

It plays for me. I have seen this happen a few times when a new song won't work on one browser for a little while. Try a different one to see... I think Bluto once suggested clearing cookies to address the issue.

After a short while, the problem always seems to just show itself out anyway.

Also, Clown is a very nice song! Thanks for pulling it out of the vault for us.

Hi Francesca,
Just wanted you to know that last night, when I got home from work, (10pm my time) I plopped my world-weary frame down at the computer and the first thing I listened to was "Shallow Grave." Your lovely voice washed over me like a gentle ocean wave and I relaxed into it. You have a great instrument, and you know how to use it. Great songwriting skills, too. I'm a fan.

Yes, you have a cool voice.

Never have I thought to give or deduct points to anyone's artistic output based on their age, young or old or from whatever time period. I just check it out, and it could have quality.

I look at my own stuff that way, too. My old songs have their own power or voice. I do know my ability to perform and record has improved, but the writing may or may not have magic coming from anywhere.

A big chunk of the music I’ve uploaded here falls into this category. The way I see it they’re as much part of my identity as what I’m doing in the moment. The music I made when I was 16/17 comes from a completely different world that doesn’t exist anymore. I could never replicate that music if I wanted to as it was written from such a vastly different perspective. I’m not that person anymore.
