Hi Jax, Some music stands the test of time of course but not necessarily because it moves us or even that it's borne out of talent. You have to include Novelty songs, One hit wonders, you must remember songs that were created through circumstance, protest songs, tribute songs.
Today's listeners are moved but not in the same way, they enjoy the sociability of music rather than the spiritual, reflective stuff. They don't always want meaningful lyrics but they like to sing out the hooks, just as people did through every decade.
I also don't agree that appearance is a factor like it was in the 1950s for example. It's almost de rigueur to be a 'larger' woman and for a male to have 'Mum appeal' slightly cute and cuddly or even geeky.
Music can be personal but it can also be something to share and we must take account of that.
