Speak To Me
I'm looking for songs with real stories in the lyrics.
Could be personal hurdles you overcame.
Maybe funny anecdotes or recollections about some nostalgic way of life you remember.
Or perhaps a tribute to the life and achievements of someone you (or we) know.
Ideally the song will have a beginning, middle and end... just like a book
It should preferably be a story with words that I can analyse.
Lyrics are important to me so I'll probably choose artists who write an introduction and add lyrics when they upload their song.
Use this thread to tempt me to listen to your story / song.
Thank you, Verity

We gotta get in on this one because we think we got the story song of the year, of the decade! It really hit home for a great artist in his own right Steve Iannetti who called it the best thing I ever wrote. It's about the 2 years+ I worked at the US Post Office. The words were written on an envelope as I sat for hours sorting mail in the cubby hole job that was called 030. it's a fairly long song but it took awhile to tell the whole story of a man who became my nemesis, who from the day I walked into that giant box building knew I was not the same kind of man as he, to put it nicely.

Well, this is just what I'm looking for. Anyone who knows me will know that I have a short attention span, so when I listen to and enjoy a song right to the end they should know it's been worth my time. Thanks Negative Ts I can't put it on my new Station but it goes down in IMP historical tales :)

Great lyrics, Scott….very Dylanesque. It amazes me that you can run this website and still find the time and the energy to write and record so many great songs. I admire this ability as multi tasking is not my forte. Your personal stories are a nice change from the political stuff but it’s all good as they say.

Hi Verity,
I put this song back up just for this thread. My daughter hooked up with the wrong people in college. Drugs, partying, took all of her money, used her car, left her to watch the drugies kids, but kept her full of meth too. When we found out, we confronted her, and she chose them. We cut her off and couldn't for the life of us figure out what we did wrong. She finally got in trouble with the law, and we gave her another alternative.
Since then, she is now a store manager, married, and doing well.
For You was written during that cloudy dark time and to this day, I can't play it live without choking up.
Anyways, here is For You
Cheers,
Duane

Oh Duane, thank you so much for bringing "For You" to IMP, it takes pride of place on on my Station now. What you wrote on this thread tells the whole story and the song makes it so much more emotional. I choked up a little as the bridge ended. She's so lucky to have you and for you to have her, I'm glad it all worked out. Verity x

Great song, Duane. You and your wife shouldn’t blame yourselves. The early years in one’s life are the hardest. It’s like walking through a fire.
We’re lucky we make through without burning up. Your daughter is fortunate to have such understanding and patient parents. I’m happy that things worked out for her in the end.

Hi Verity, I have always been notoriously bad at creating links on this site. So, apologies for not providing one. However, on my IMP page is a song that I believe fits your criteria called "Little Torso Boy". It is a song about a horrific experience I had in Vietnam over 50 years ago. Much Respect To You, Stoneman

Thank you so much Stoneman, I'll just copy my comment on this harrowing story song below.
"Some stories are hard to tell but have to be told for closure on horrific events people witness and also to let the wider world know what cruel things happen in war. Aside of that, this is a really well made song and extremely moving with an engaging performance by the writer Stoneman"

Speaking of closure on events, this reminds me of a story told on my first record from 1999. While it's not as traumatic as war, telling this story in itself kind of saved me. It's about a teacher who traumatized me with beatings in the fourth grade which was something I thought about on many long nights from that point forward thru my 20s when I wrote this song and eventually recorded it. Once I did that it somehow freed me of the lingering nature of that terrible year. In fact it even has a line in it - 4th grade was Vietnam.
The video includes snapshots I took when I went back to that school (after doing the song) to finish reliving the event.
