Mobile) June 7 - WABB radio personality Cherish Lombard is not giving up her fight to save Spencer, a pit bull mix, who's currently living in the Mobile City Animal Shelter waiting to learn his fate.
Spencer was found last Tuesday, wandering the streets around Hunter Avenue in midtown Mobile. He was dehydrated, hungry, and dragging a 10-foot chain around his neck.
So far, his owner has not come forward; and it's the shelter's policy not to adopt out pit bulls because of their potentially aggressive behavior, and the fact that so many people use them as fighting dogs.
Spencer was to be put down yesterday, but Amanda Kramer, who wants to adopt the animal, filed a restraining order that delayed that euthenization. Amanda Kramer: "I think you should judge the deed, not the breed. And I'm very confident that Spencer has a chance."
Many other people think Spencer has a chance too. Lombard says, one of her listeners actually agreed to give the young dog a temperament test to determine whether or not he would be safe for adoption.
Cherish Lombard: "What he concluded was that Spencer has been abused but he has no violent tendencies and he is very adoptable."
Who's the expert? Lombard says it's a man working for Homeland Security, who has worked with pit bulls for about 10 years. The test, she says, deals with a lot of time.
Lombard: "I know he spent a lot of time with Spencer. He said he spent almost 6 hours with him and he sat down on the floor, he gave him treats, walked him around, put him on a leash and just really spent time, got to know him."
But, whether or not Spencer's life is spared is ultimately up to the judge. A hearing is set for Friday.
