How did you get your band or artist name?
Just curious, sometimes there's a good story behind a name.

well, and this is a true story btw.. I had a dream where I asked this alien in a UFO what name I should use. The alien told me I should call myself "the missing link", which I did for several years. Eventually I had another dream where I told the same alien I wasn't that thrilled with that name, and asked if he had any other ideas. And he said "Father Time is the missing link."

well perhaps their main window to humans might be in the REM state. Then again it was probably just a couple strange dreams from eating spicy food or something.. You'd think if they were gonna go to the trouble, they would've given me a name that led to fame and fortune or something! :)
Actually I've had enough unusual experiences that I definitely don't believe we're alone in the universe.

We wanted to put our music on the internet, couldn't decide on a name so it was a kind of 'well, it'll have to do for now' thing! We were going to change it but kind of like it now....just as well really, considering it's our last names too!!
Good topic maria! xx

HARDLY LUCKY because everyone always said we were so lucky to be good..lucky for the breaks..lucky to get to play live shows on the radio...and it was hardly lucky...it was all hard work and getting through the tough times...we started as Hard Luck which was more negative and flipped it to a positive.
ATTENTION - While we are on the subject of ALIENS
ALIENS ARE COMING TO ABDUCT ALL THE GOOD LOOKING AND SEXY PEOPLE.
YOU WILL BE SAFE, I'M JUST EMAILING TO SAY GOODBYE

back in early highschool (so , 1990 or so) Superchunk had an album out (No Pocky For Kitty) with a song on it called Punch Me Harder, ,, i dug it and stole it, , maybe cuz i liked how Eric's Trip (great canadian indie rock band from the '90 as well) stole their name from a Sonic Youth song, , but really, cuz my songs back then were even more personally heartrenchingly sappy and although i needed to write them, and loved them, i knew how bloody sappy they sounded, and figured anyone writing lyrics that cheesy and "oh-poor-me"-ish needed a good hard punch to keep them in line. i truly don't think that my lyrics are nearly as whiny any more (and i was never insincerely whiny like so much of that emo-trash Dashboard Confessional-like crap out there) but the name stays, cuz i still love and identify with it. and i know that i'm still sappy at heart, , , and i definitely definitely need and appreciate a good punch to lift my head back up sometimes.

The Rubrics
|
11/9/2006 5:12:38 PM
Believe it or not, "The Rubrics" is a political statement of protest...an inside joke that has to do with the state of the university I teach at. Almost every assignment you give out as a professor these days has to include a "set of rubrics" or detailed guidelines for doing the assignment. No detail of the assignment must be left untouched so that the student is left taking no intellectual risks toward their goal, not of learning, but of getting a good grade. In their extreme, rubrics rob the student of learning an important intellectual skill: problem and question formation since rubrics present the student a problem already predigested. . Well, I'm well-known as a cynic and an "anarchist" at my university, so performing under a name that might connote agreement with a prevailing pedagogical fad or with "any rules and standards" is quite humorous to some colleagues.

Reply to Wikked - don't leave us to the ugly bugs ball pleeeeeeease!!! This reminds me of an acoustic set Paul and I used to play under the name, FunDepression, some of the dives we played were just, well, super depressing, but we were 'supposed' to be having fun LOL, we liked the name but everywhere we went venues either couldn't remember it or couldn't spell it so we ditched it and eventually ditched the set too LOL!!

Reply to The Rubrics, another fascinating name and quite cleverly chosen with an ironic twist, it's amazing how the powers that be in any given arena seem to delight in removing a person's capacity to think for themselves, we are all supposed to come out the other side of any learning experience moulded into one shape, nope, it never happens!!

Good god, I was actually clear in my explanation of the Rubric's name... This old academic is finally learning to communicate clearly I guess. :-) I'm so glad you see learning in the same way I do. :-) I'm not just an old obstructionist (another name given to me at the university).

The Man With No Band
|
11/10/2006 11:50:25 AM
The name may sound simple enough ... (Some guy playing with no band) but the name is really derived from several aspects of my life... It's true that I am not playing in a band, but the name is also in reference to the fact that most of my band of friends are dead now, my band of children are all grown now, my wedding bands are useless now.. (two divorces)... and when I finally found the right one, Leukemia took her away ... All of that plus I am not really talented enough to be a "One Man Band", (had trouble holding cymbols between my knees) :) .... maybe I'm a band short upstairs, but anyway, it all led to "The Man With No Band" ....

i was already quite the Rubrics fan, , , and after reading this, i am even more so. the college i'm in right now does this with their assignments, , as well as giving hour-long reviews before a test the students have already had two weeks to prepare for and i think it is taking away from actual learning. praise to you, good sir, , , at believing in education, as well as irony!

Up until recently, the word "rubric" wasn't used much at all except in religious, liturgical circles. The "red" words found in monastic prayerbooks and the like are "rubrics" (cf 'rouge'), that is, "stage instructions" that tell you how to act and move during religious rituals.
More useless information suppose to inspire your imagination!

Wow you asked a very good question, lots of feedback, My name Isle Of Ewe is just simply a new way of saying I love you, and not getting into too much trouble.
Also it has a furry critter in it and everyone who knows me knows I hold innocent creatures above man.

SqurlyMurly
|
11/13/2006 6:37:29 PM
My real name is Muriel (3 syllables) but for whatever reason, relatives (and there were lots of them) pronounced it Murl. I have a lot of squirrels around my house and when I keep long late hours i tend to get a little squirrely! One of our friends happen to teasingly call me squirrely Murly. When our "new" band took its first gig we were called SqurlyMurly & The Nutball Gang. The band was very short-lived and since I was pretty much recording on my own I kept SqurlyMurly. However, I am thinking I may change it to just SqurlyQ. I like that name (I'm a 3 Stooges fan and remember an episode that keeps it fresh in my mind). What do you think....SqurlyMurly or SqurlyQ?!

Well SqurlyMurly is stuck in my mind now! I won't be able to get used to you by any other name Muriel, it's easy to remember and gives you an identity which is different from many others, I like the original SqurlyMurly. Another interesting story behind a name too :)
