Why can't the English?
Why can't the English teach their children how to speak? This verbal class distinction by now should be antique. If you spoke as she does, sir, instead of the way you do - why, you might be out selling flowers too.

Seriously, my favorite brand is South African English. Is there a name for that? I love the sound of it.

Actually it was Rex Harrison who asked it in....1964?
"Why can;t the English learn to set a good example to people whose English is harmful to your ears?
The Scotch and the Irish leave you close to tears..
There even are places where English completely disappears.
In America,,,,they haven't used it in years."
hmmm...

Actually the Broadway run started in 1956. Julie Andrews played Eliza and it is her on the original cast soundtrack.
The film came out in 1964 with Audrey Hepburn as Eliza, which raised some controversy at the time. Further, her vocals were dubbed by Marni Nixon.

English is such a mongrel language anyway. It's so annoying when the English go on about others ruining it. ;p

We haven't heard the last word on this yet. If anything, it's even more relevant today.
