Tangerine Dream appreciation thread
In light of recent conversations here on IAC about Tangerine Dream, I figured it would be appropriate to start a topic dedicated solely to the legendary German band that is one of my greatest musical influences.
To kick things off, I'm going to post an extract from their 'Live at Coventry Cathedral' performance which is also the music on one of my favourite albums 'Ricochet'.
Just before I post the clip though, here's a little background information as posted in the topic that inspired this thread which helps put into perspective the significance of this album for me.....
".......I was adopted when I was seven weeks old and met my birth Dad when I was in my twenties. When we first met, we immediately started talking about music. He is a guitarist and was the original lead guitarist for Daddy Cool (Ross Wilson) before they became famous.
Anyway, I asked him if he'd heard of Tangerine Dream and he said he did indeed know of them. He was in a band that played support for them in 1975 on the Melbourne part of their 'Ricochet' tour!! Ricochet is one of my favourite TD albums and here was my own Dad playing support for them on that very tour!!!!"
...and here's the clip....

Those of you who are familiar with the TD live album 'Pergamon' will recognise the sequencer part in my TD tribute, 'Becoming Real! IV'.
I am going to re-edit this footage very soon to improve the video quality. The upload for this footage was from an old, low bit-rate wmv and the resolution and frame rate are not the best but the sound is fine.

Nice one, SP!! I've heard of TD but am not too familiar. I'll listen after Christina Aguilera's album "Stripped" I'm now listening to has finished.

Cool clips, SP. Of course, I've seen (and favourited) your Becoming Real IV. In fact, I can't wait to see the re-edited version (although I'll have to). However, I hadn't seen the Coventry footage. I'm ashamed to admit that, as much as I like TD, there is still a lot of material out there that I've not heard/seen (there's just so much material out there, period). I welcome every bit of exposure. They are an amazing group, and I have to say that they've been an influence on my music for a long time.

RR - I think you'll like TD a lot, considering your use of sequenced rhythm beds to improvise wood flute over. Between TD and Kraftwerk, those two bands initiated a lot of the pulsing synth rhythms that made the mold for a most of the electronica today.

srm - I'm sure you are right. Several people have said after hearing some of my music that I would like TD. "Improvised wood flute over sequenced rhythm beds" is a perfect de_scription!

Red,
I'm certain you'll love TD as Steve has mentioned. :-)
Steve,
I think it would be very difficult for ANYONE to have seen and heard everything TD have done! They have over 50 albums and have done countless live shows over the last three and a half odd decades, not to mention all their film score work.
Here's a couple of newer TD clips. First up, one in the studio..

Love the Hats! Excellent piece. It's hip to see 'em 'up-close-and-personal'.
I know what you mean about the wealth of material. Being a film buff, I really enjoy their soundtrack work. "Thief" and the music they did for "Risky Business" is great, but their soundtrack for "Sorcerer" absolutely MADE that film.

You know, I have and love the 'Sorcerer' soundtrack album but I still haven't seen the movie!! They also did the score for 'Firestarter' with Drew Barrymore too and Chris Franke did the score for 'Universal Soldier' with Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren.
Here's the second of the newer clips I mentioned above. This one is live. One of the first things I noticed in this clip is that Iris Camaa is playing a Roland V-Drums kit (a TD-20). Great to see another female V-Drummer. Yay!

....I love that second live clip, SP - The guitar is almost David Gilmouresque but I love that it has melody - Something often missing from electronica.
I wonder if TD would be interested in my flute being featured on a track?

Excellent clips, SP. I'm going to have to 'favourite' them, on my IndieMusicClips.com page. Back when I was in a band (with the Shaved Fish guys), we did versions of "Marakesh" and "Too Hot for My Chinchilla". "Lily on the Beach" had just come out. I think it was one of the first with Jerome on guitar, and he seemed to breathe new life into TD (not that they were rotten before, you understand). Thanks for posting the vids.

Saw them around the time of Exit. What was that/ early '80's? They were enjoying bit of a comeback because of all the synth-pop bands at the time. They were... atmospheric. It's hard to remember but for some reason I was a little disappointed. Maybe I was expecting some sort of trans-portation. Maybe I wasn't in the right frame of mind?
The first album I heard was Sorcerer. I loved it. It was so spooky, but it also had great melodies and chord progressions. And I just loved that Mellotron. I was surprised when I found out the movie was about a truck that happened to be named Sorcerer, not a sorcerer. I haven't seen it either. It would be cool to see just for the music. After that I got Cyclone I think. The one with Bent Cold Sidewalk. What a cool name! I was surprised to hear vocals. Great memories. Time to dig through my vinyl again.

Larree,
You're showing your age now buddy!!! TD started in 1967 ;-)
Red,
Today's quote of the day comes to mind when you mention about your flute in TD music...."If you don't ask, you don't get." - Stevie Wonder
Steve,
Didn't realise you played with the Shaved Fish guys. Cool.
Lily on the Beach is a really cool album. At first, I was a die hard fan of their 70's live improv work and the later stuff 'Tyger', 'Lily on the Beach', 'Melrose' etc took a while to grow on me. Now though, I find I am really loving all the TD era's but there's still a special place in my heart for their 'Pergamon' era work.
Stegor,
It's funny that you mention about expecting some sort of transportation from the 'Exit' show. I remember when I first got 'Exit' on CD and lay down with my headphones on to be immersed totally in TD.
'Remote Viewing' actually DID trigger an out of body experience for me!! Seriously!... and I was so not expecting that from 80's TD. I would've been far less surprised to have had that experience from 'Ricochet' or 'Pergamon'. Now, every time I listen to 'Exit', it reminds me of that experience.
Oh, and I absolutely adore 'Cyclone'. The critics bagged it for the vocal and drum parts but I think they work extremely well.
Here's another recent TD clip I just uploaded to IndieMusicClips.com and here's the comments I posted about it...
"Tangerine Dream Live in concert. Audio remastered from original 22.05K sample rate, highly compressed web clip by SuperPuss using SuperPuss Music and Image spectral enhancement techniques."

I'm pleased to hear you had such great memories of "Exit". It is my favourite of their albums. I kind of see the varying 'eras' of TD each in their own right. It's hard to compare them. I have favourites from each of their 'incarnations'. Sort of like King Crimson. Everytime a member changed or technology changed, the sound shifted in some ways- and always excellent.

Absolutely agree with you there Steve. :-)
There's talk of Edgar doing a combined solo and TD performance and performing his older stuff live too. I REALLY hope they tour Aus again soon!!

That sounds cool. Hopefully they'll hit Oz, and maybe over here again, too. I don't see many concerts, but I'd come out of my cave for that one.
