Surround mixes of classic albums and new formats for artists
Who here besides me is into discreet surround mixes? I have personally been into any form of surround and have experimented with various formats over the past couple of decades.
I've been doing surround gigs now since the early 90's and am really excited about the recent formats available to us as artists such as DVDa and SACD. Both of these formats though, seem to have had a very small impact in the market due to all manner of reasons from consumer confusion to poor marketing and the advent of the MP3 mentality.
I lie in hope that new formats such as BluRay and HDDVD with their support from the major movie companies also have an impact on the audio only market. I personally prefer BluRay from a technical standpoint and hope it emerges as the victor over HDDVD.
IMHO, Sony got it wrong with SACD but I believe they have it right with BluRay.
Post your opinions here :-)

xxxxxxx ooooooo xxxxxxxx sorry Titania, I just couldn't stand seeing NO ONE responding any longer..!
This is definitely not my subject but I'll take a stab at it .. :)
Discreet surround mixes ... let's see ...
I understand discreet I think ..(something you can't be, after drinking all night)...
Surround ... I know that one too !.. (your surrounded come out with your hands up)..
Mixes .... I prefer straight but I know what they are...
DVDa ... must come before DVDb ?
SACD ... DCAS spelled backwards
HDDVD ... Harley Davidson Movie ?
BluRay ... Now that sounds cooool ... too cool to be a sad guy named Ray ... maybe a blue Corvette ? ...
or the Blue Oyster Cult Laser Show .. yeah that's it.. saw it twice and I still remember them BluRays..
Well that's my best stab at it ... I have figured out what an MP3 is in the last few years though.. so check back with me in 5 or 10 years and maybe I'll be a bit better at this conversation.... but then again maybe not... :)
Somebody out here knows what this girl is talking about... Speak up !
Ps... She probably won't beat you up if you don't agree with her ... :)

LOL Sam :-D
Thanks heaps for your comical input here!!
Sony have been rather clever with their naming of BluRay. It sounds so much cooler than the (in my opinion) inferior competitor, HDDVD.
Oh, and I love Harleys too :-)

Well, I don't know much either, but I am intrigued by the possibilities and perplexed by the slow advancement. Back in 1975 or so my dad got a Fisher Quadrophonic system, one of the first available. I still have it and it still works! It has a joystick instead of a balance knob. At the time I thought it was going to replace stereo in no time. I got a Quad version of Dark Side of the Moon, but the cartridge on the turntable wasn't quad so I could only pretend.
Anyway, we use Cubase SX for our recordings, which has surround sound capabilities. I've been wanting to explore it but I know it's impractical because of limited media formats and hardware. It's enough of a challenge to get our music to sound great in stereo, let alone add another dimension.
So those are my thoughts on surround sound!
By the way, I dig your music.
