Chart idea for IAC home page... need YOUR opinion!
I recently made a post on the IAC forum about a suggestion I have for the home page. Since most people seem to be active here rather than on the forum, I thought it would be best to post my suggestion here too. This is my forum post -
If I may make a suggestion, it would be good IMHO to have this list (the top overall in genre) on the IAC home page along with the Big50 and Underground 40 rather than having to click the relatively obscure 'charts' link at the top of the page.
I personally think it would inspire more artists to get a lot more active if they thought getting more plays could get them featured on the main page.
Here's an example of what I had in mind -
The topic on the forum can be found HERE along with other opinions.

I think that you have a really cool idea. I think in general certain genres get less attention than others, and there are some really great artists worth the attention. My humble opinion.

You do your homework SP!
It's a fine idea---------personally I am only interested in the Genre charts as they are not picked by a committee but reflect plays! So in my opinion they should be highlighted on the Front!
We all know that if you're not on that front page, you are hidden from any new
listeners, but I admit I would still like a song on the KIAC hitline, then I wouldn't have to post comments for a while!!

I think it's a good idea too. A lot of artists (like me) have no hope or aspirations of getting noticed by number of plays, not because the music isn't good, just that it appeals to a niche audience. You know, a small but rabid cult following!

I'm really glad you guys are all with me on this. Lets hope management notice and agree with their community ;-)
Man With No Band,
LOL about Mia's new look!!! I didn't notice that until I had saved the screen grab. The title under the pic always changes slightly before the pic does and I obviously pressed the screen grab button at that moment!!

Thanks for your suggestion and the effort of producing the graphic of the front page as you envisage it. The front page is a prime site of course and maybe the more you have on it the more confusing it might become. IAC is constantly changing and moving forward trying to cater for the demand of the listening, looking, playing, contributing visitor.
It is true that some of the smaller, niche genres (there are quite a few) may not reach the higher profile lists, however a simple click on 'charts' will open them all up. I'm not sure that a Classical or Comedy fan for example would mind following this route to find pages and pages of their sort of music.
Remember it's not just the 'Top' in genre that is good or worth listening to - there are some wonderful songs much lower down the list that maybe suffer from lack of personal promotion. With so many thousands of great songs at IAC you can see how difficult it is to prioritise and spotlight to everyone's satisfaction.
Just my personal view and again thanks for all the comments - Verity (IAC Hostess)

I appreciate your point of view Verity but, with all due respect, I think the IAC charts as they are now are a little misleading. It wasn't until reading through the FAQ's (which the vast majority of visitors will NOT do) that I discovered the featured charts are not based on song plays!
It is great to have the opinion based charts of the IAC team but I really feel that the charts actually based on song listens (which are reflected both in song quality and the amount of hard work promoting by the artists) should be given a little more than an obscure link amongst all the other small links.
I am not suggesting placing numerous links to all the specific genres (that would be confusing and messy) but just one well placed link to the overall list. Once people are there and realise it actually exists, they can then select the sub genres.
I realise the IAC team want to showcase the effort they put in selecting songs for the featured charts and that is great but I feel the artists deserve the same recognition for their own promotion of both their songs and IAC too.

We're considering/planning on adding something there but I think you make it sound more severe than it really is. We've never heard of anybody who had trouble finding the play charts. Not only are there 2 different links leading there on the menu but there's Find a Genre on the left side of the page. On top of that there are 36 different links which lead to the genre charts next to the songs on the front page, and a link on the Underground 40 page too. I definitely wouldn't call that obscure. Also somebody (Satch) had the idea to perhaps have a banner where the genres rotate, which might be an interesting way to go about it as well. Anyway rest assured we're considering the various options and there's a pretty good chance that the next time the programmers go into the front page programming that we'll be implementing something in relation to your idea. :)

That's awesome news Toby!! Sorry if I sounded a little to brash with some of my statements but I tend to get very passionate about things sometimes! I am a musician after all. lol :-D
I see your point about the number of links to the genre charts too. Fair call there.
Anyway, the main reason I am so passionate about this is because I have developed somewhat of a passion for IAC and the opportunities it creates for us indie artists.
It has been a long time coming but finally more and more artists are realising the potential of bypassing the majors and making a mark while maintaining full control of their own creations. That is something I am personally very excited about. :-D

Funny - maybe I'm odd, but I have a tendency to ignore what's on the top of the charts and deliberately dig deep. I look for the small among the small. It seems like the reason a song is high on the charts is because it has mass appeal and therefore is more like the mainstream. I think I live in a perpetual Opposite Day - If it's number 1 it must not be any good (except Valentine which is marvelous - an exception to every rule).
Now, if I had a song at number 1 I'd have to eat those words of course.
Maybe there should be a playlist of all songs at the bottom of the charts. If it got clicked often the playlist would be in perpetual flux.
I always wanted to say "Perpetual Flux"

Way to go SuperPuss. And IAC for listening... That's the best of both worlds now. I LIKE the idea of a 'brain trust' picking songs they like and creating a list based on their preferences. It adds personality to the site. Kind of why blogs like Pitchfork are so popular.
And I also like charts that are based on number of plays. That reflects another measure of excellence, as decided by all IAC subscribers.
