Country Singer Nabbed for Killing Caged Bear
Singer Who Shot Caged Bear Pleads Guilty
Troy Gentry Agrees to Pay Fine, Give Up Hunting in Minn.
AP
DULUTH, Minn. (Nov. 27) - Troy Lee Gentry pleaded guilty Monday to a misdemeanor charge of falsely registering a captive bear as being killed in the wild.
Under the plea, the 39-year-old country singer agreed to pay a $15,000 fine, give up hunting, fishing and trapping in Minnesota for five years, and forfeit both the bear's hide and the bow he used to shoot the animal in 2004.
The plea meant Gentry avoided a trial, which had been scheduled to start Monday.
Gentry, of Franklin, Tenn., declined to comment to the Star Tribune of Minneapolis as he left the courthouse.
Ron Meshbesher, his attorney, said Gentry pleaded guilty to "a simple charge having to do with improper tagging (of a game animal), and that's all it ever was."
Lee Marvin Greenly, 46, Gentry's local hunting guide, pleaded guilty at the same hearing to two felony charges of helping other hunters shoot bears at illegal baiting stations he maintained inside a national wildlife refuge near Sandstone in east-central Minnesota.
Greenly faces a maximum prison sentence of five years for each count, forfeiture of all-terrain vehicles he and employees used to reach the bait stations, and a maximum fine of $400,000.
Gentry told the court he bought the bear from Greenly with the understanding they would videotape a hunt inside the bear's enclosure, which was surrounded by an electric fence.
"Lee and I made a deal about harvesting this bear," Gentry testified. They also agreed to report it was killed in the wild 6 miles east of Sandstone instead of on Greenly's property south of the town.
U.S. District Judge Paul Magnuson ordered a pre-sentence investigation for both Gentry and Greenly and told them to appear for sentencing at a date to be announced later, or risk an additional charge.
In exchange for Gentry's plea, federal prosecutors dropped a felony charge of violating the Lacey Act, which authorities said bans possessing or transporting illegally obtained wildlife.
Gentry and Eddie Montgomery are the country singing duo Montgomery Gentry . Their hits include "My Town" and "If You Ever Stop Loving Me."

'Gentry told the court he bought the bear from Greenly with the understanding they would videotape a hunt inside the bear's enclosure, which was surrounded by an electric fence.'
What kind of people are driven by the thrill of killing an animal that cannot escape? And on top of that they want to watch the videotape afterwards...
And only a five year ban on hunting and trapping????
If only there was the same drive to give something back to the planet instead of wishing to delete the earth's occupants in the most horrible cowardly way.
Shame on those that partake in such depraved bloodthirst.

What kind of COWARDS are men and women who take pleasure in hunting - especially canned hunts where the animals held inside enclosures, setting them up for the kill with no means of escape ( more often than not the animals are fed food before hand with tranq., drugs in them - obviously not enough to put them right out - just enough to make them droggy as not to move out of the way too quickly ) - animals used for canned hunts are raised by humans - they depend on humans for food and care - and then their trust is betrayed all because of the almighty dollar - again !
Troy should have been banned for life from picking up a weapon against any animal - anywhere !
I support the efforts being made to close down these canned hunting facilities, as only cruel, coldhearated and extremely greedy people would invest in such a ' business ' !
I used to wear a button, it said SUPPORT THE RIGHT TO ARM BEARS !
Goodness if only they could shoot back !

Sick, sick people ... they should be banned for life from ever hunting and made to contribute in some community service to help re-establish populations of wildlife. And finally, they should be given a psychiatric assessment to ensure that they get the treatment they require. People who have been found guilty of cruelty against humans usually have a history of cruelty against animals. They are sick people who need psychiatric help before they hurt someone! As for the ones who set these things up for financial gain - they should be stripped of all their assets not just given a fine. He has probably made far more than the fine that will eventually be imposed - and after a few years in prison will be released a rich man. Neither sentence is true justice for the animals nor protection for society.

Let's not mix this kind of out right atrocity and all hunters in the same group O.K.
... I don't hunt anymore because I don't have to... but if it were not for my father and his hunting skills, providing for his family, (my 2 sisters, brother, mother, father and myself) very well may have starved to death any number of Winters.. I learned to hunt and help as a young boy.. and I was taught to respect the land and the animals... and saved many more animals than I ever shot.... I have been an outdoorsman all my life and have witnessed animals starving because of over population and the diseases it brings... Hunting has it's place... Most people that have ever lived in the country will tell you this... These guys were flat out wrong, but don't group all hunters with these idiots...please... peace

Where's Judge Roy Bean when you need him? You know, "hang'em. Then fine'em 40 dollars for hangin' around"
I know, its a bit extreme but it gets the point across. We, as a society, have been far too lenient...and we still are.
Sometimes I get cold shivers when I hear about the atrocities we impose on innocent creatures.

No definitely this is not to be classed in the same league as hunting for food in order to feed a family, which still happens in some parts of the world today and is not a mean spirited act for entertainment as this offence seems to have been.
Recently there has been cases where youths have committed terrible crimes towards animals and filmed them on their mobile phones, that is the kind of cruelty that really must be dealt with in the courts.
Best wishes to you & bye for now, Maria xx
