When you record a song?
How much time do you spend on the vocals vs. other instruments?
I don't think I spend enough time when I do vocals, mostly because I do them last.
I'm working on it though and it's tough.
How bout you?

When I record songs (which is not very often these days) I am a lot like Frank Sinatra. One take and out. Boom.

If I'm teaching someone else to sing the song, it takes 3 hours. If I sing it myself, it takes one hour. If there are background harmonies - add an hour or two. Sometimes if I change a lyric after the song has been sung I go back and spend an hour punching in the new line(s).

We always do vocals last too. By that time I've heard the song in a million different versions and I pretty much hear a vocal all set in my head. It takes me a while to relax in front of the mic so we do a lot of takes - just singing it through beginning to end. It's usually the 4th or 5th one that's good and they go down hill from there haha - but sometimes little sections are good for back up vocals, or something. It's a process for sure. I don't necessarily pay more attention to the vocal when I first hear a song, but I know for most people the lyrics and the voice are really important, so I try to get it right.

Thanks for the comments.
One take? I can't do that anymore but really cool if you can do a nice vocal in one take. I'm like Shoe City, I do a lot of takes. Even then I'm never really happy with the end result.
The next song I do, I'm going to try doing the vocals earlier and see how that works out.
