The problem with music is people.

Yes it is; and in the context of a site like this, the problem is that everyone is too nice.

I'd have to agree with that. People schoomze when they should be honest. I don't think it's helping anyone by pretending their music is good when it's not... but I understand why people do. We all want to encourage each other and support a positive environment... but in a way the "dishonesty" is enabling for lack of a better term. If people suck, I guess I think they should know, haha.

Hello Paul,
thank you for the article. This is kind of sobering... In the meantime some UK artists try and strike back:

That article by Steve Albini - yes. I've read it previously. It's a good resource, useful.
No one said IAC was mentioned. Why would it be, there?

FUCK y'all, and your schmoozing comments.
Did you ever think that MAYBE some of us that praise other artists, are doing it because we've ACTUALLY listened to, and LIKE or LOVE their fucking music?
Might do good to check out those of us who actually do REVIEWS, that are somewhat well thought-out.
Then you'll realize, we only critique songs that have somehow touched us, and seem WORTHY of comment.
THAT's NOT fuckin' schmoozin'
If SHAKE were here right now Frylock, he'd kick your whiney little ass......

What's wrong with schmoozing? Should we all be Simon Cowell? I was always taught "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all". In the context of asking for a review, then brutal honest is in context. If you want brutal honesty, review a bunch of tunes on garbageband, and then get the real nitty gritty on your tunes (I.E; insults, nit pickiness about production, even when you ask for no comments about production, down right nasty, mean spirited belittling, etc.).
Just because someone may like music that another may despise, doesn't mean (when they compliment the music), that they are 'schmoozing'! Perhaps everyone should revisit the definition of schmoozing:
schmooze : to converse informally, make small talk or chat (from Yiddish ?????? shmuesn 'converse', from Hebrew sh?mu?oth 'reports, gossip').
It seems that that is what blogs are for...to schmooze.
Music is way too subjective to accuse someone of false flattery, just because they may like (or love) music that you may think sucks....no?

No, we can't all be Simon. But we need a few like him.
This is going nowhere, and it's time for a change.

Phlegm I'm talking about the times I've read people "praising" music that anyone with a reasonable and sober mind would recognize as crap. That's schmoozing, and it happens here and you know it. However, I should say it happens everywhere, it's not just an IAC thing. There's nobody really mean here and when someone approaches it (Choosy Susie) people can't handle it. So there ya go. I'm not saying there should be per se, but that's why we get accused of kissing each others asses a lot.
Fry, yeah Space Ghost is on Adult Swim. I googled it and caught some episodes the other night. It's worth a watch.

Yeah, you're right. I know that there are those who schmooze in the manner you have described.
I just wanted to make a STRONG case for those of us who actually LISTEN, PICK and CHOOSE, what we like, and THEN schmooze appropriately.
Phor example -- i'm just about one of your biggest IAC Phanboyz, Jesse.
no --- I'm talking literally. I'm 6' 5", and 7" tall with platform zombie boots on.
so, uh.... yeah. I'm your urrr...biggest phanboy on this ole site.
VERY glad to find other Space Ghost fans out there. He used to have the craziest interviews on television. LOVE that show. And fuckin' LOVE Adult Swim, at least MOST of it.
ANYHOO.... carry on the schmoozilating discussion.
-haven't forgotten I still owe you a D. I. Y. copy of my CD; but i might just hold out for sending you a copy of the Romulus X Records UK CD, to be released sometime in the winter of 2009/2010....

This should have been happening 20 years ago when the net was first starting maybe this situation would have never arrived. At least something is happening. I still think the big corporations youtube et all should be paying royalties to artists regardless of who uploaded there material. They have ultimate responsibility of what goes on there servers using we can,t check every video or song that goes up is bullshit. This did not happen when the big labels started pressuring them suddenly any music by that label was removed from there servers. I partly blame them for allowing the situation that has arrived for allowing a free for all. Which has resulted in the artists doing all the work and the corporations raking in all the cash from adverts and so forth and not caring what is uploaded. In essence if they are using your music on there site you as an artist should be getting a cut of any revenue that has been made with your material which should be paid as a royalty payment to the artist. Blaming the consumers is just a con trick by them to deflect blame away from themselves and protect there revenues
