Olympic curiousity
Jan 26/10

As I'm in Vancouver, the host city for the Olympics I'm curious how or if there will be any impact on the local music scene. I hear about many local artists getting 'Olympic' gigs, mostly unpaid as far as I can tell, but the promise of crowds listening.

I've opted out of pursuing those types of gigs. Mostly because I think I have enough on my plate, and the crowds may be a bit over whelming.

If you're planning to come to Vancouver during this time, I'd love to hear from you. What are your plans outside of watching the games? Where are you looking to get your info about Vancouver?

I will be busking a couple days in the week. Just waiting for my schedule. Translink has been adjusting their music program over the last year and half, I didn't realize my permit was still valid. So since it is, I thought I'd take advantage during the Olympics. This will probably be the last time I busk.

I'll be part of a new thing happening in our newspaper along with HevyD Popcorn. Free downloads of local talents - donations towards Haiti Relief http://www.theprovince.com/entertainment/music/downloads/index.html - I'll be coming up in about 6 weeks.

I'm now hosting two open mics, Wed & Fridays (8-10) at El Barrio Restaurante, 2270 E. Hastings, Vancouver. www.elbarrio.ca

That's it for now, really would like to know what your Olympic plans are

I am trying to avoid the Olympics . . dread the restrictions in freedom and mostly, the bill.

I am in the half of the city's population that is
a) not invited
b) expected to clean up
c) ordered to be nice and smile

saw an article today that said, basically, the city employees are to conduct themselves in such a way that is
a) sycophantic treatment of "dignitaries" that probably own slave-labour sweat shops
b) a kind of slavery of it's own kind, considering the elite/developers continue to jack up the prices on rent and strip the city of fun

but don't get me started :) - - hope you get some gigs and money

Thanks for the replies. @Fred..it is what it is, and us little people can't change it but I can try and reap some benefits :-) First time I'll be in a city with such a big event so I'm excited to see the impact. Not too mention cheering our Canadian athletes who are pretty independent like us musicians.

@Sam, it's all going real well. I've found my happy little balance, with a little push once and a while. I am looking forward to the busking - just 'cause I've decided it will be the last time. Mostly because I'm playing in enough places that I enjoy and I'm getting a bit older (just a bit ;-) ) ...all the best to you & yours..
