I need your help
Hello all,
Its good to be back. In the time that I've been away I have been working on a new website. The purpose of the site is to give a guide to musicians to which music websites are good and which are rubbish. Obviously IAC will be getting a glowing report and thats testiment to the awesome community here.
Im sure many of you will have experienced different websites while trying to promote your music and Im sure you will have all had different experiences. As I am no expert on the matter, and will certainly have missed out on some sites along the way so Im calling out to all you guys and girls. If anyone has a bit of spare time to give me some opinions or would like to write any articles for the site I would really like to hear from you. The idea is to write a bit about each website and detail their pros and cons. Also Im hoping to get some articles up on, creating your own website, selling your music, songwriting and production.
Ive uploaded the site layout but none of the links work yet as I have very little content, but if you want a look at what it will look like it is temporarily hosted at http://www.benelliot.com/promote_v2.
If you are interested, and Im afraid there is no money involved in this, then you can get me at benelliot@gmail.com
Love you all.

Hi Ben!
I remember you helped me a while back, so here's a few I have dabbled in!
www.cruxy.com----------this is a digital media marketplace, unusual vids, music, art, dance, soft porn etc!
the html doesn't work well but we get lots of hits there and sell stuff too----and it's free for any amount of uploads----fairly small site
www.ezfolk.com-------another free unlimited uploads, a bit old fashioned but a core of dedicated folk and accoustic musos --run by Richard Hefner
www.Reverbnation.com---- looks good but can't get the songs to play, emails go unanswered!
www.slicethepie.com ------sort of pyramid sales thing where you buy shares in new music!
www.amiestreet.com-------I don't get this one ---very poppy
www.isounds.com ----small and similar to iac.com without the pipeline and cameraderie
cheers

Hi there
www.Reverbnation.com---- looks good but can't get the songs to play, emails go unanswered!
Totally agree!! Just joined that one a while ago but man, it sucks!
So I'll be saying by to Reverbnation.
www.amiestreet.com-------I don't get this one ---very poppy
Also agree on Aimestreet
My big problem or problems with them were the user interface is terrible and the way they run the sale of music, still remains a mystery to me.
http://www.ourstage.com
Now this one I like, they have some really great ideas to get the music around, including a battle of the bands that anyone registered can participate in.
They also have a built in chat room you can activate or deactivate on your home page, very cool.
SellaBand
A group out on NL with what I am thinking now is a very sophisticated pyramid scheme.
You as an artist register for free and are allowed to post three songs and they call the artists Creators.
You the investor also join for free and you buy parts of bands you have faith in for 10.00 a share, they are called Believers. Once an artist gets to 50,000.00, the site puts you in a studio and makes you a CD to be sold by....yep, the Believers.
Hmm, that in one big budget for a CD. Can you say scam?
The VS-Planet
Run! Don;t walk away from this site!
They talk a great game to sell you an artist site for I think 60.00 a year and can only upload 128k for your songs, what? Yeah, the friggin dark ages.
They also have a radio station called VSPR, this is also a joke and the last time I checked their listening hours for the whole month was 246 hours.
They give good hype on how it's small now but with the help of the great musicians there it will become huge!
Well, after two years of killing myself to make it become even a little bigger, nothing happened. They are a good site if you have a VS problem but if you want to get in with the community I would suggest to only go there if you like getting insulted and seeing political threads on most of the page. They had the most immature old people I've seen in my life.
MySpace.com
Ya know? It's a good site to have, lots of networking, they give you six songs and they are very reliable.
Hope this gives you a little start anyhow.
Steve

Hi there.
music.download.com : It's free, but takes a couple of days for songs to be approved before they're put on the site. Same for changes to text and stuff. So updating is really slow.
garageband.com : To upload a song for free, you need to review 30 other songs (15 pairs). Songs with the best reviews get to the top of the garageband charts. I got a bit adicted for a while, but got burnt out on writing reviews. I haven't been there for a while.
myspace.com : 6 songs for free, good networking. It's got me a few gigs too.
radioparadise.com : It's a great internet radio station. I've tried a couple times to get my songs on it, unsuccesfully, but it would be cool to get one on there. A great listen.
geocities.com : Not really a music site but a free home page. The download rate for the free site is too small for music (4.4MB per hour), go past that and the site gets shut down for a while.
Cheers
Moray

hey, thanks everyone.
Would anybody mind if I use what you have said on the site?
Sam, I totally agree, IAC is the only site I really involve myself in whole heartedly, but I expect we have all had a journey to get here, hopefully this site will shorten that journey for some people.

Nice idea Ben..Good luck with it:)
Songplanet
Is a good site for putting up songs...Its basically a site for songplanet 24 hour radio..Passionate live DJs with a live chatroom you can go in-friendly people..I think they're always looking for new DJs too.
"www.Reverbnation.com looks good but can't get the songs to play, emails go unanswered!"
Rob...I think that sites used as the place to put up your songs on facebook-thats all i use it for anyway..
Its got some good features tho-fans-instant stats etc..And there dosn't seem to be a downloading limit..

Hmmm.... The only ones I haven't seen mentioned, that I've been playin' with are all FREE, because we truly are starving musicians:
MP3.com (hard to get noticed as an INDIE here... But should be in your lineup of sites for distributing your original music)
BetaRecords.com (they JUST revamped the whole site so 3 years of stats & hits from fans are now gone --- VERY frustrating. I'm not real happy with this elitist little site -- they only really help "their own" )
IMEEM.COM -- You should really think about adding at least ONE of your better songs to this one, my fellow musicians... People will eventually find you from all over the world by accident.
PunkRockers.com -- Uh..... Doesn't make much sense, unless you have some songs that would fit in the PUNK / EMO/ SCREAMO/ Avant Guarde/ Oi / HARDCORE or HORRORcore or any OTHER "CORE" genre -== > BUT if you DO have tunes like that --- This site is JUST NOW getting going, and a GREAT time to join up and start networking. One setback, they have a really horrible "rate punk/indie models" feature. BUT, that aside, there are PUNKS, POSERS, Promoters, LABELS, ZINES, FAns, AND GREAT Bands from all over the world (INDIE, D.I.Y. & SIGNED / MAJOR / WELLKNOWN) on the site!
PUREVolume.com Did anybody mention PUREVOLUME yet? It has some good NETWORKING aspects & you'll gain a FEW fans from all over the world right off the bat... Hard to promote on it. And most have NEVER heard of it.
IdolUnderground.com -- Urrrr.... Because they offered me a chance to put up a song for FREE, I did. And then about 2 years later, they offered for me to put up another one... but it smacks WAY to MUCH of American Idol -- use at your own risk.
I've got about 10 more that I HAVEN'T tried yet, that nobody's mentioned. BUT I doubt I'll ever go with any of them at this point.
Don't forget that you really should have a .com for yourself, your band or music production/studio or publishing company... We have of course, ConversationSuicide.com -- But everybody I've talked with says this is MUCH less important than say MYSPACE or IACMUSIC ....
BOTTOMLINE = MYSPACE and IACMUSIC.com are the MOST useful & exciting for promoting your art/music/craft..... In my semi-humble opinion.
