IAC co-op? Album?
This idea probably isn't a new one, but why don't some of us/all of us, get together and put together an album, if we had enough people, we could probably pay for it as well.
What do you think? Wanna discuss it anyone?

Just pick one of our own current tunes? Or write a song for a special theme of the album. Is this for the IAC site for downloading, or will it be sold in stores? I'll go for it anyways, cause no one has ever downloaded any of my tunes. Oooops! You may not want my stuff after all (lol).
Let me know later and I'll pick out a tune for you. Duane

I think a compilation cd would be good for the site and for the artists and would cost very little for each artist to produce hard copies. Ofcourse a downloadable version would cost nothing and is something that we could try out right away. If we gathered 20 artists across the genres we could actualy present a very wide range of what is avaliable on this site. I did suggest to the team about doing this and giving away a free download to everyonewho joins the pipeline and advertise it ouside the site as such. Scott seemed keen so perhaps he could update us on his present thougts. A hard disc version would only cost about 6p per artist per disc and cover if we had 20 artists and we could sell these at gigs and independent stores. Yes I'm keen.

Hi - Ray Porter has already had some thoughts on the same lines, might be worth contacting him. If I had the chance to be part of something like this, I'd eat my own eyeball if it got me a place

Here are my original ideas for the dmd.
1 We find 20 artists who want to contribute. (perhaps prime artists only).
2 We use one track from each on the disc.
3 The disc is avaliable as a free download to anyone to encourage the dmd procedure and to give exposure to the artists.
4 if interest is gained then we produce further discs which we will charge a price for selling. IAC 1, IAC2 eg
5 Producing a hard disc would involve a little investment and we may need to do a uk one and a usa one simply to make the financial transactions easier.
Here is one equation example on how it could be done.
roughly the disc and sleeve would cost £1.20 and sell at about £4.99
£2.00 would be divided between the artists and £1.80 would go to the person or shop that is selling the disc. This would include their vat amount. This would encourage people to sell the discs as they would make the most money. Artists could purchase the completed cd's from whoever orginises it at a price of £3.20 of which £1.20 is for production and £2.00 gets split between the artists. Whoever then sells the disc at £4.99 gets £1.80.

I know business is business Ray, but the only part of your idea I don't like is the "prime artist only". What about the rest of us!!!!
Let me know how it works out. Maybe I'll buy one.
Like I said before, let me know if you want one of my tunes. I'm going to work now.

Ray's idea for phase 1 is simply brilliant, and I'd hope that IAC would give full backing (including some marketing support), because the whole thing embodies what this place stands for - musicians sharing music, open to their peers' criticisms. I particularly like the free download part; phase 2l can be worried about later, if (if!) it works. Taking in the point about 'Prime' artists only: I really wouldn't like to be the person who makes the final choice (from submissions or by invitation?) and no Cathy, an eyeball would be a small price to pay. Even eaten raw.

ok, I've discussed this with other IAC administrators, and wrote to Cathy, who has graciously agreed to coordinate this project. I know she'll do a great job, and this should really rock, you all strike me as team players.
Anyway, IAC will support this as best as we can but it has to be a project coming from the artists, not an official IAC release. If we did that we'd have to involve the programming dept who would pick acts from the entire site. This is more of a community thing that y'all can have fun with and it could be quite successful !
Might be best to go with a DMD since they are easy to create, allow a lot of additional art, and don't cost anything upfront like discmaking and such.
IAC will
1) donate a prime page so you can upload songs and set up a DMD. Project should probably be limited to 30 songs though it can be less. I recommend you require 256 mp3s, these sound great and also play well on even slower broadband. Anyway, I think if you do the DMD you should really do up a nice Ultrapage with graphix, have you ever seen one of these that somebody did some work on ?
Here's an example. but it's really quite limitless, you could include all kinds of links to each of the artists in the liner notes or song notes, for instance.
2) we will put an ad for the final product in our front page ad rotation (on right side) for at least a month.
3) we will air the DMD with any additional program material to debut it on KIAC Radio (the internet version) and advertise that event on the marquee.
I spoke to my comrades about this free DMD concept that Ray spoke of on his post and for various reasons we feel that it goes against some of the concepts of the site, and there are logistics issues as well. So that's one thing that's probably a no go. It also wouldn't really be fair to other artists on the site cause we don't as a policy allow free downloads.
Anyway that's what I have to add. This is the first of its kind on this site so I think it's a little extra special. You know IAC is behind your efforts ! Have fun with this and don't give Cathy a hard time. :D

Scott - I see the IAC side of this, what you're offering is generous. Cathy - if you're prepared to co-ordinate this, you're a heroine (and no, I'm not doing a creepy-yeeuch thing to get on board) - there will be flak. Anything I can do to help, please sing out, this should be a great example to the big boys of what musicians can do if you just let them go with what they know. - Brian

OK Commander Cathy, I presume you'll take a few days off to think this over - then, as you can see, you've plenty of willing troops awaiting your orders. Seriously, it's a big job, time spent in planning won't be wasted. Good luck - Brian

Commander Cathy?! That's funny!! Ok everyone, I'm going to do some planning and send discuss some ideas with people on the site. My husband, Anthony, says he is already an 'internet widow' so, oops! This is going to be tough, but fun, and hopefully will help us all on our musical journies.
Love to all

Ive been dreading writing this. I feel very stupid now. Anthony has told me off for taking on such a project and it has caused some domestic un-ease. Better to do this now, while it's not up and running, so I'll have to hand it over to someone else. I'm so sorry, but at the end of the day, I have to go along with what the husband says!

ok I think I have a good solution..
I think this can be a good team effort but I know from past experiences if you don't have a chairperson it can go haywire. And some of the guys on this thread have done a lot for the artists on the site so it's like sort of impossible to pick one of you. Anyway in my experiences, I've been a part of more committees in online music than probably anybody heh, I've generally found that men can get powertrippy :D but do well with a woman in charge. So anyway, I'm going to start a private forum in the forums area for this, and I asked Ash Ferry to chair it, she had already told me she wanted to help. Hope that's cool with everybody.
Give me a list of your forum names so I can let you into the private forum. Then you can divide up jobs and all that stuff.

Wow, I'd love to be on an album, but would my stuff make the cut? How could it be done fairly other than paying to be on it.
I'm surprized IAC has not done this as yet. We used to have a great adult-alternative FM station here in LA called KSCA, and they put out some fantastic "Live From The Music Hall" compilation CD's. We have all four of them. Anyhow, I'm surprized that we don't see a KIAC CD produced each year, with a portion of the proceeds going to charity.
A great initiative, I hope to play a part.
