Recording advice needed-can you help?
Hi
I could really do with some advice about recordings. We've just uploaded one of our songs, that had a lot of hiss on it, and that's now ok, BUT, overall the recording quality is just not how we would like it to be....
Following is a list of the stuff we're using, please keep in mind that we don't have much money, if we did, I would just go out and buy an amazing mic, but I'm just wondering if anyone at IAC can give us some tips on how to make the best of what we have, or maybe suggest a reasonably priced mic, (We're in the UK) or any other suggestions. Thank you so much.
Cathy x
Here's the list:
Vocals and acoustic guitar: through an MXL condenser mic, using a tascam US122 audio card into a computer. Software is: Cubase
Midi: reason and emu ultra proteus
Effects and mastering: VST plug ins
Electric piano: Technics PX30

What is your new song, I would like to listen to compare, I'm new at mixing at home too. You Have a better mike then me, I can only help a little bit from what Ive learned.
Couple of do nots, never mix with head phones, just used for isolating problems and close listening. Mike placement is very important, Experiment. When you Eq something, try removing mid muddy stuff. I used to try and add body and it usually turns out bad. Shelving is important too. Each sound should have its own lone frequency range, If two sound have same range, mud. I have mixed and loaded and Just changed it right away, computers are very sensitive with music, Low mids seam to really show up as mush on mp3. I also check a mix before I burn it with my portable mp3 player head phones for overdriven areas. Also fresh ears are best. If you've been listening hard for an hour your ears get fatigued. Take breaks, compare your mixes to other songs. Also get as good sound as you possibly can before you record anything. You probably already know most of this but hope it helps some.
My most recent mix with acoustic guitar is Perfect pain if you wish to compare.
I am new too so take above info with a grain of salt. Forms are a big help too.

Hi there
The song I uploaded (The Sky Will Fall) isn't new, but it is a new version...http://iacmusic.com/songs.aspx?SongID=24564&ArtistID=40508
I have just listened to your song 'perfect pain' (great song by the way!) You see, when I listen to yours, I hear clarity, and when I listen to ours, I hear.....mud! Argghh!
Thank you very much for your advice, most needed and welcomed. We'll keep on keeping on, but already practically welded to the computer as it is!
Peace to you
Cathy :)
