Any Plumber'S" out there?
On a sewer line, how hard is it to insert a PVC pipe in between 2 leaded in metal pipes?
I ask because some plumbers say I have to change out all my pipes and some don't. So I am confused as to the credability of any of the plumbers now. How do you say?

what's the diameter of the metal cast iron pipe? do you have a bad section of pipe? whats the reason for the plumbing work? how long are you planning to live there?

I plan to live here a long time. The reason for the change in Pipe is I want to add a bathroom and I would need to T-off of the existing 4" pipe. What are your thoughts on it? TIA

every situation is unique. they should make "T" couplers to transition between pipe and PVC. if it were my house, and i planned to stay longer than 5 yrs, i would consider replacing the iron pipe. of course, cost is a factor here also - depending on how much pipe needs replaced.
is your pipe lead or is it cast iron? there is a difference. i have never fooled with lead pipe and you are beginning to stretch my knowledge of plumbing. :)

Thanks Shane. I will go to the site and read more about it. They are cast Iron pipes but sealed with lead.
Appreciate your help,
Vic

Baby says be careful, cast breaks very easy. The reason they reccomend replaceing it is 2 fold. If the pipe is cast iron it has been there prolly since the house was built. It will probably be 50% full of shit, and I do mean shit. It is often very hard to find a joint in the desired area to add the pvc tee. You cannot cut cast iron and put it where you want. If you are lucky enough to have a lead sealed joint where you want the tee, it is not hard. be very careful seperating the pipes at the joint. They make all the supplies for such an add on. Baby will reiterate. Be careful, most plumbers don't like the risk. A cellar full of shit is kinda well shitty. To choose a good plumber see how much ass crack shows when he bends over. If you can fit say a polish sausage in there then your golden.

LMAO, Baby... Thanks for your input. Maybe before I do anything I should Snake out the pipes. Yuck! ... That is of course if I can convince the plumber to keep the pipe.

reluctantly, after your 1st post i recently helped my bro in law replace pipe sections in crawl space - bath drains were still cast pipe and not draining. replaced with PVC. once out - the line (as baby says) was full, FULL of shit. nothing passing thru it.
not 3 weeks after, he had to do same thing on the other end of his house - 1/2 bath and washer - same scenario, same problem, same solution, still full of shit - replaced with PVC. house is about 50 yrs old.
have a blast! :)
