Bob Elliott inspired ...
So ... I keep trying to grow as an artist ... many here have inspired me and I think it has made me a better artist ...
This idea for this new tune of mine came after listening to Bob Elliott ... both lyrically and sort of that signature vox style of his ... I've used the whispery voice before when playing live, just my first attempt at recording it ...
I like the sound of this tune and plan on expanding the ending and also adding another guitar panned on the right side ...
Hope you enjoy
Heroes and Goats
Lyrics
Temperatures rise ... Temperatures fall
Slippery slopes ... Heroes and Goats
All wind up on the same parlor table
People come ... People go
Mineral dust ... Cardboard and rust
Don't matter what you once were made of
Don't try and hold on to tight
ya know it's all a mirage ...
There is no order just one big
chaotic collage ...
Rules are for fools who believe
somebody's keepin' score
Truth be told it's all
a smoke and mirror show
Vessels expand ... vessels compress
Menial task ... first or last
Only moments in a blind man's fable
The fire burns ... the fire burns out
Oceans of blue ... me and you
Just figments never meant to hang onto
Your ticket only last so long
and then you are gone ...
Ya might as well use it right
and use it wrong ...
Rules are for fools who believe
somebody's keepin' score ...
Truth be told it's all
a smoke and mirror show

Good line.
Well, it took my head on a long trip last night to think about inspiring anyone in their music. I think it's a cool recording for sure, and I always thought you were a good writer, Sam.
But you had me wondering across all the roles I play in life, do I ever inspire anyone toward anything? I know I'm sure supposed to in my job.
I also feel that is one of the main things that not having any fame really does mess up. I always wanted to be part of the bigger musical conversation, you know, influenced by and influencing the artists. That's the part of being a nobody that I don't care for: being detached from that.
But maybe it happens sometimes anyway.
NIcely recorded, too. How'd you do that recording?

Well Bob ... (no smoke intended) ... you and your music DO inspire me ... Your stuff is very interesting and very "not normal" ... which I'm sure is partly who you are, but I know you work hard at your craft ... I read it in your words in your blogs and the results are obvious in your recordings ...
I'm trying to learn to be a better recorder, but at the same time, I do not want to lose my passion for being creative ... Listening to your songs helps me remember that ... and it also inspires me to try and get the sound of those little intricacies to come out ... I've got a long way to go ... so keep putting out your tunes, it helps ...
Recording this ...
I just used the computer and audacity ... I mic'd the acoustic first, then layed the vox on top.
I really concentrated on my guitar tone on this one ... I think I actually got it to sound close to what it really sounds like when you are in the room ... (still learning to Eq. properly)
I just finger picked, I think the tone is much richer than using a pick but with my cheap mic it is hard to capture the tones ...
I had to use a filter on the mic when I recorded the vox and got pretty close and personal, the result was a pretty "hot" signal ... and I was surprised that I was able to control my sss's and ppp's for the most part, without having to back away ... I did pick up a slight hiss in the vocal track, but it's not real noticeable ...
I'm laying out another guitar track for the right side and may add some quiet shaker ...
Thx for saying you think I am a good writer ... that made my day !
Peace
Sam

First off, Sam:
A very cool song. I can hear the influence of Mr. Elliott on the tune, and on your vocal approach, in particular (as you pointed out). Although, I would also like to point out, that I like your regular vocal approach very much. (I think that I've said that before.) This is a really nice song that is very well-recorded and the guitar tone is excellent, esp. for being done with cheap equpiment.
Bob is right, you are a good writer.
And Bob:
I completely agree with you about making a mark. Thankfully, I have had some feedback from friends who have told me that I inspire them and have affected their songwriting styles. It does feel good.
In that spirit, I feel that I should let you know that you inspire me, as well. This fanboy says that you kick my ass every time that I hear you.
