MUSIC....THE BUSINESS SIDE...OH BOY
O.K. since this site has such a wealth of knowledgable folks on it I need some help....I am getting some serious interest from some signed artists wanting to cut some of the songs that I have written but I have no knowledge whatsoever in what to expect nor how to protect myself and maintain control of my songs...these things are like my children and I don't want to get stupid and find myself in a trick bag...any ideas where I can go to protect myself...HELP!

Hi, just a couple of things, always make sure your songs are copyright protected, plenty of info on ASCAP & similar sites, just google and you'll be able to read up on the pitfalls, secondly if your songs are getting interest from artists wishing to record them you'd best find a good publisher double quick!! A publisher will protect your interest in your music, of course there will be a split but publishers are supposed to be on your side to get you the best deal possible because they will take a cut too & that's incentive to look after any possible financial gain. A publisher will also be able to represent you if someone tries to rip off one of your songs and not pay you for use of the material. Congrats on your success & good luck, Maria :)
