Rock without a drummer

Here is a question; how do you write the rhythm to a rock song without a drummer there to play off against? You could try a drum loop/sample, but it has no feelings, no independent creative sprirt of its own. Is it actually possible to write a rock song with a decent groove without a real drummer?

But do you not find it hard to get a proper groove going. I find it a little difficult to syncopate with silence!

I've seen a couple of solo acoustic artisits play live. Tom palmer particularly. Her plays his rhythm by damping the strings at the bridge with his palm. It sounds so cool. Havent seen him play, but "when it's good" by ben harper is a good example of this. It sounds better with an aciustic guitar amped up.

Yeah well...... Real drummers, are always going to be better than computers, providing they can play their instrument. But we have to make do with what we have to hand, i'll get it one day, but hopefully we will have a proper drummer by then. Ed
