Friends are okay but we're all utterly alone anyway.
Neil Young has a song called Touch The Night. What I think it's about is that ultimately, we're all single vessels on the water. When push comes to shove there is no support system that can be relied on. Sure you may have a family but you and you alone decide what you're going to do when you wake up in the morning. You decide if you're going to tie your own life up with obligations to others, who you're going to be nice to, who you're going to avoid. You can't blame anyone else if you involve yourself in someone who brings you lower self esteem, or someone who you hope can connect you to others. Maybe if you understand how alone you are in the universe, you'll be stronger, won't depend on others because if you've ever been truly dependent on them, you'll find out that they let you down as often as they pick you up. Personally, I've experienced in my life that whenever you depend most on others, you're almost always screwed, they don't come through. Do it yourself, decide yourself. That's the way it's meant to be. Everyone will touch the night.
