There's something cruel about it but I do love to eat the fish.

"It's OK eat fish 'cause they
Don't have any feelings"
Nirvana - Something In The Way
On a less lyrical & musical note, when consuming fish, it's important to carefully select the species, in order to avoid overfishing the seas any further:

I eat meat ! there we go, i just came right out and said it... I EAT MEAT....big meat, small meat, round meat, square meat but mostly dead meat...I don't mind vegetarians,in fact some of my best friends are vegies but they are pretty dull to go out for a meal with and as for vegans !...nothing against vegans but enough said, just don't go to a restaurant with them ,it's a hellish experience....Anyway...i think i came on here to talk about fish..oooh the lovely little fishies swimming around the pond...hmmmm yum yum they taste lovely after they've been battered and then fried in batter...they don't feel a thing..dem fishies are stupid and love being caught...don't they ?...hmmm fish and chips hmmmm...anyway, i digress...getting back to vegetarians, what really annoys me about them are the ones who say "i don't eat meat but i do eat fish"..it's still bloody meat/flesh/blood..ISN'T IT !!!!!!?????....ooooh i feel better now i've got that off my chest...
Time fish puns;

That's based entirely upon what one is fishing for ... isn't it ? ... :)

We are all fishing for something whether it be compliments, pudding, enlightenment, knowledge, and of course... fish. To each their own. I think it is offensive to condemn anyone for eating meat, I once had a really good friend that was a cucumber that ended up in a salad.

As I now live on the coast I sometimes fish from the beach.
Any fish I catch are either instantly killed by me if I'm going to eat them, or carefully unhooked and gently returned to the sea if I'm not going to eat them. Before taking them home to eat I gut them and toss the guts into the sea to feed the other creatures there.
If I catch too many I give them away to my neighbours (which may have something to do with the fact they never compalin about my noise!).
One of my best friends, Hoot (same guy who plays guitars etc but won't record or play in front of strangers) is an expert fly fisherman and I met him through fishing. Hoot has fished all his life (he's local born and bred) and has caught the same fish in a lake many times - Hence proving that the fish don't sufffer if caught and returned properly. He fishes for sport and makes his own flies as well as sea fishing.
I don't seem to get much time for fishing nowadays.
When I kill a fish I say a silent short prayer just to say thanks for the gift of its life for my food. I have killed other creatures at various times - Either purely to eat or to end their misery if injured and suffering beyond help.
Sometimes someone will come along while I'm fishing and watch. And when I get a fish on the line they get excited. But then when I kill it and there's blood, they become horrified! I then usually politely ask them if they eat fish and if they say yes, I ask them what the problem is then? Supermarkets disguise fish (and meat) so people are so out of touch and become ignorant.
Fresh roadkill can be tasty too - Had a small deer last summer. That doesn't make me a Bambi murderer!!

....You're right, Jo. Balance is all important.
The worst culprits are the huge 'factory' ships that scoop up everything and also governments who insist that perfectly good fish such as North Sea Cod have to be wasted back in the sea already dead just because of set quotas.

Okay, follow up question. Do fish taste better after you catch them? I ask this because even though I haven't gone fishing in 15 years, I remember back in the days when I did, those bluegills and sunnies tasted so good that I brought home and my mom cleaned and cooked up. They don't sell fish like that in the restaurant, do they?

Hi Fly - Yes, fish always seem to taste better when very fresh (unlike meat which needs to hang). Fish tastes even better if you marinate it in something simple for a few hours before cooking.
They say that house guests are like fish - They begin to stink after 3 days! :)

I was once told by a Native friend that when you leave this earth you will go through a stage where you sat surrounded by a circle of Spirits of all those whose lives you have taken. You had better have justification for having done so!! Whether you believe that or not the point is simply do unto others as you would have done to yourself (and that human and animal life is equal).

Silverwood - I don't know for certain of course but I reckon you'll be fine because you ate the flounder. If you just left them on the beach it would probably be a different story - Totally unecessary killing.
FatherTime - I reckon you'd 'score plus points' but again, I don't know until I get there (assuming it to be so!).
It's mostly consideration and respect for other life and common sense I reckon. Only take what you need and try not to waste life. We are only human though.

Father Time...it's good to see you being humane to the bugs even though we all know that given half a chance they'd be chewing on us like crazy, chomping away on our remains like nobody's business with there little feelers feeling away, slithering all over us in an incredibly unempathatic way, chattering with each other in that clicking type talk that they do,telling there fellow bugs where the best munchy bits of flesh are....ugh...i would go on but i am just about to vomit after reading this back...i am sick...i need help..........

I compltetly agree that bugs don't think about how cruel it is when they bite us and give us fatal diseases. But, hey it's a bugs life out there. A dog-eat-dog world... Ok I'll stop. I've never been accused of being completely sane, and my family thinks it's hilarious when I try to free butterflies from glass houses etc....I just know that it is important for me to be myself and be prepared to accept the convictions of others. So go ahead and eat up, splatter bugs, and deal with the fact that I don't! LOL. Good stuff. Oh but hey--- what exactly IS recycled toilet paper?

What is all this negativity towards bugs, Mr Great Indoors? As if humans are so perfect! Ever watch yourselves having sex? I have and I will never fly into a bedroom again. I prefer the kitchen where the moms occasionally bake a tasty pie.
On the other hand, we bugs do it in mid air, it's perfectly magical.

Red Robin: I have read that most fish thrown back into the water after having their throat punctured etc do not survive, despite what anglers and fisherman believe. They swim away and then die. (no matter how nicely you remove the hook) So you might as well just cook them up and eat them or feed them to your cat. deb

Fish killing. Yes I hate to eat them when they are still alive. All things considered (and i just returned from fishing the sea of cortez). We caught and released. The caught fish were consumed and scraps fed to the pelicans. The local restaurants purchased a couple and served them fresh that night. I love fish, fishing and offering the leftover back to nature to reproduce.

(Henry Limpet) : What if I told you I used to be a human being?
(Ladyfish) : I don't care how terrible your past was, Limpet.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
( Bessie Limpet) : Henry, am I the widow of a man or the wife of a fish?
(Henry Limpet) : Well, let's be logical, Bessie. You can't very well keep me in the bathtub, can you?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
( Henry Limpet) : I wish, I wish I were a fish.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Henry Limpet) : Do you suppose that we could just be more or less friends?
(Ladyfish) : Friends? But wouldn't that be more or less nothing, Limpet?
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
(Henry Limpet) : Doesn't it kind of give you a thrill of hope, George?
(George Stickel) : Hope for what, Henry?
(Henry Limpet) : Well, with the war in Europe and new weapons being invented all the time, why, what if men were actually foolish enough to destroy themselves completely? Then, you see, the fish in the ocean would develop into a new race of men, and, well, this time they might turn out better, you see?

O.K. .... since this fish thread keeps popping up to the top ... I figure it's time for a fish story ... (I have hundreds of them but I'll just give ya one) ... :)
This one is in honor of my good friend and fishing partner Jim, who is no longer with us .. Man I miss Jim ...
I grew up in Kansas ... we have all kinds of fish there and I have had the pleasure of fishing for most of them ... but my favorite fishing has always been going after the Monster sized catfish ... Usually we fish for them at night because that's when these big lunkers like to feed ... I fished a lot with my good friend Jim and Jim Loved to fish ALL the time ... He also liked to "noodle" (hope I spelled that right)... The big cats feed at night but in the daytime hours they love to burrow out a hole in the side of the river bank and lay in the mud, usually just a few feet under the surface ... Noodling involves either wading in the river or reaching down from the bank into these holes and letting these big fish clamp down on your arm and pulling them out of the water ... It's kind of neat because these fish are lazy and you can reach in and run your hand along their sides to see how large they are and you can even pat them on the head a bit and they usually just stay put ... but a fish being a fish can't resist trying to eat your hand when you put it up in front of their mouths ...
Now when a fish is in the water he is very, VERY strong and if he is large he can easily drown a man ... so I learned early that one should have a good grip on a large root or a tree branch or something solid on the bank, BEFORE one sticks his hand into one of these holes. Anyway, Jim and I were noodling along the little Arkansas River one day and Jim got a hold of a Flathead that probably weighed in excess of 60 lbs. (make that a flathead got a hold of Jim ! hee hee ) That fish took off upstream and yanked Jim right along with him ... Catfish will roll in the water going deep with their prey and then come back to the surface before going down again ... It was funny after the whole ordeal was over but at the time I just knew that fish was gonna drown ol' Jim ... time and time again that fish came to the surface and I'd see Jim grab a quick breath before he and that catfish went rolling and disappearing again beneath the murky water ... I tried getting to him but they just kept getting farther away from me ... finally about a hundred yards upstream Jim somehow got free ... he didn't have much skin left on his arm from the elbow down to his fingers and he had swallowed a whole lot of that river but he was alive ... about a week later Jim showed up at my house with a new leather glove he had designed that went clear up past his elbow ... and he grinned and said ..."Let's go fishin'" !

When I was a kid we used to always go fishing...one weekend my dad and I caught 31 stripers...this was on Cape Cod at Sandy Neck Beach in Sandwich. I spent many weekends as a child fishing with my family and my cousins. When I became a mom, I remember getting up one morning in the pouring rain at 4am by myself to go fishing in the Cape Cod Canal while my mom, dad baby, and my husband were sleeping...to don my wading boots and cast at 4 in the morning! One time I was with my family and a friend caught a huge bass, and he was clubbing it...suddenly switched in my head that day and I stopped fishing...I've always eaten fish...I stopped eating red meat and chicken for about 20 years...but ate fish...now I will eat fish, chicken, and I don't buy red meat but occasionally I will eat it when it is served to me. I've always tried to eat healthy most of the time.
