My parents both grew up without television, so gathering around the radio used to be a common occurrence for them. When I'm home alone, I often have pandora on while I paint or do other things. Music is so ubiquitous in our society that people take it for granted. They don't really listen because most people are not musically educated or tuned in. They don't know wha t they're listening to. When I listen, I think about all the myriad choices that the songwriter or composer had to make. I used to listen to new records with my friends when I was younger. We would talk about those choices and the music became even more relevant. Listening to music with other people can be as spiritual as playing music with other people.

I get what you're saying, however, communal listening doesn't work so good for me, I just don't know enough people who share my tastes. Also, I much prefer the solitude and privacy of headphones. Other people can be distracting.
The only time I'd enjoy sharing music would be if dancing was involved but then I wouldn't be hearing the music so much as responding to the beat and the other people.

Yeah, I used to listen with friends all the time. Had listening parties with my bandmates, where we would turn each other on to new music. It was super fun.
But you are correct, only headphones now. And in the car.
I miss it too.
Or maybe I just miss those days, period.

Never happen again like the 60s 70s , people are so into themselves, addicted to our Iphones ,listening to music or talk shows with ear buds, trying to find something good is tough, I think the people involved as programmers at college radio stations or such organizations in the commercial end still sit around and figure out which artists should get a crack at being featured.
College stations are great, and more open to getting an aspiring artist or new person seeking some traction on getting their music happening and getting playlisted ,not many at commercial stations do this, although I know a number of commercial stations especially in the country world who do have musicologists or those who are looking for a specific sound that fits the current genres, , and lets face it, the advantage goes to the well known NAME artists.
There has been a dumbing down in the music world as we all know and originality is not something that is sought after as much as it once was, a lot is like chopped baloney and so much the same, pretty sad and reflection of the lousy crap that is being pedaled by the labels and those that are connected at the hip in the business and the music industry has suffered though, as people find their own way of making their own playlistings at such places as spotify, deezer pandora and here at IMP.
There is hope though, there are some real good music directors in the college music world, I know of some who are pretty open to the works I send them cause I deal with them a lot, they have the advantage and keep that fire of listening to music in a group going since they have evaluation and music committees who pick music from the many submissions that come into their stations.
You have to understand the hundreds of submissions that are sent per month and the stacks and stacks of cds that sit in front of those that surf through these submissions, it is daunting!! And with the upswing of digital submissions, well thats another whole world
Anyways
The listening committees are an active group in this case since they assess evaluate and determine which groups will be accepted into their stations rotation, now of course it depends on a number of things which I am not going to get into here as i have to do other things .
Saying all this, my wife knows how to suss out great music, better then me, and has a great playlisting put together on her spotify stations, she could be a great programmer and music director
cheers and break a toe or two!!!!!!
