If horses rode humans around the track in a race, whipping them constantly, would you place bets on the winner?
I've never bet on a horse race and I sure as hell wouldn't bet on the human race.

Humans usual run in the rat race with a monkey on their back. If the bets are on getting through to the finish alive it is pretty iffy at best.

I'm not a gambler, but if humans we're poked and prodded and mistreated like BULLS are in the Arena, I'd bet on that! =:-)

To answer the question directly - no. But a race between half horse/half human hybrids - hell, yeah! Centaur racing, it's the future. Probably.

I don't know that I'd bet on it, but it might be enjoyable to watch (depending on the choice of humans). Unfortunately, horses have difficulty holding a crop.

Most people place bets on a loser - that's how gambling works...

No, but I bet it would be on Japanese TV first. They have all the strangest stuff.

I can believe it. We've got a Japanese game show import airing here for a while. It's a repackaged version of Takeshi's Castle.

I've heard of a 'steeplechase' but never a people chase. I think a steeple chase is were horses jump over church spires. And I've heard of 'point to point' but haven't observed it in this thread yet ;)

Sorry, J, I excel at being pointless.
I have to say I like the sound of the English steeplechase, over the boring version we have here in the Satates. If a horse comes up short, he gets his conscience pricked!

That should be "States", of course. I was anticipating the 'edit' feature.

Years ago I lived a few blocks from the Santa Anita race track, and used to catch a few of the races after school. I was too young to bet, but I new an old man that was there everyday. We would look at the program, the riders, the past history, win-loss percentage, and figure out how to make the best bets. The old man would place the bets for me as well as his, and I made some spending money from time to time!
Santa Anita was cool cause before every race you could go down to a "staging" area below the stands and actually almost touch the horses before a race. You could see up close the muscle structure, temperment, and how well the horses looked. I've picked some real winners that way too!
Kinda Ironic though that I carry a horse as well as I carry a tune. Ha Ha Ha

Best not to let folks know you can carry a horse so well, Duane- they'll put you in the race.

...and then Ed finally spoke his last words... with his last breath he recalled the half eaten apple that he once discarded in lieu of a few beer soaked blades of grass devoured from the previous night of unnatural violations... the shame was gone now... all that was left was an ever fading dream and a few lines from a Neil Young tune the stall mistress used to sing over and over again whilst gently brushing his fur... "Hoofbeats beating across the range He rode through the night with his cup of change Tired and beaten he fell into slumber But up in the sky they still had his number Up and down the old homestead The naked rider gallops through his head
And although the moon isn't full He still feels the pull, Still feels the pull" ... ;)

The Old Homestead.
That Neil song was actually performed about 10 years prior in concert. Many Young uns think it's a veiled story about the demise of CSNY.
