The Midnight Skylark Sang A Prophecy
Out of all the ways that music has informed, empowered, and shaped my life, I never expected it to become as integral a part of my literary works as it has in my forthcoming novel, The Black Skylark Z-Ped Music Player . While writing the novel, I found myself having to compose lyrics for some of the singer/songwriter characters. The result is what amounts to an album embedded in the text of the novel itself. That’s a development about which I’m very happy because one of my hopes for this project is to include a CD of songs from the novel with a special edition of the book. Because I’m a lyricist rather than an instrumentalist, I will be inviting interested musicians to participate at the appropriate time. And since I’m in the process of dreaming big, why not throw in the possibility of the book making it onto the movie screen and music from the book’s CD being used for the movie’s soundtrack. What a beautiful first that would be. But as for now, I hope you will enjoy this sample:
THE MIDNIGHT SKYLARK SANG A PROPHECY
(from The Black Skylark Z-Ped Music Player)
Oh I have seen the days and nights
of killing winds to come,
with the best of men
living sorrow on the run.
And I have heard souls of children
crying out in vain.
I saw heaven
tremble with their pain.
(Chorus)
If all else fails and rumors of war
remain a fearful truth—
one thing’s for sure that I can do:
Oh I will fly, fly,
I’ll sail away with you,
Love will shine the power
to carry us through.
I’ll sail away with you.
Millions cheer the warrior
spilling blood across the ring,
while the one who stands for peace
is ridiculed and shamed.
Must hearts forever suffer
from ignorance and greed?
Can bombs heal our souls
or set our spirits free?
[Bridge]
Well I’m searching for a vision
to still the terrors of this night,
a bridge to span the shores
between black and white.
And I’m counting on some wisdom
in the magic of the rain
to heal the burning wounds
between woman and man.
[Chorus]
If all else fails
and rumors of war remain a fearful truth—
one thing’s for sure that I can do:
Lover I will fly, fly, I’ll sail away with you,
Love will shine the power
to carry us through.
I’ll sail away with you My Sweet Love,
I will fly away with you, Oh My Joy, My Joy!
