aFFORDABLE mASTERING (wav files)
We have searched around for an affordable studio to do our mastering for quite some time and have had both good and bad !!!
We have been quoted between $150 --$200 per track -
Finally we have found Gremlen studio in Chicago-----good communicators reliable, fast!!
down to $15.00 per track online----we have then compared these samples against each other through a range of speakers---
Our verdict; yes the expensive mastering approximately 1 hour per track---is marginally superior---but to the untrained ear---friends, lovers, general audience types
The $15 studio was the best value
ALL our tracks will be gradually changing to remastered versions on our site
'The Nobody' a 4 track with some tape hiss is now a lot more dynamic and radio ready!
Do you get your tracks Mastered?
Is it worth it?

Yes Rob, some for of mastering on cassette originals is always gonna make a difference, removing tape hiss is prolly one of the most important things you can do to your tracks,
I have achieved this in the past by using adobe audition, (aquired from the internetz lol)

IMO mastering is not needed unless for commercial application.
There are other methods for removing tape hiss like running your mix through to audio tools like pro-tools has add-ons for removing tape hiss.
With todays technology and a few well spent dollars artist can get close to a mastered product in a home studio. Protools LE is not out of reach and has more high quaility than m-powered.
Mastering will be required for mass production or commercial application but by nature will compress and take a slight but audible edge off a well done mix.
I prefer unmasterred will done mix. Some songs that I have heard the same song mastered I did not like as much as the original.
Mastering does have its use and I have heard some well masterred indy songs but in general I have found it to be not needed.

Thanks Ken
I agree---this was for a CD release for Leo, but it still adds cost and we aren't gonna sell more than a few at gigs---but it seemed worth changing the remastered tracks for the originals on our page
On stations here at IAC the Mastered tracks do seem louder than unmastered which can make for uneven listening volume wise when they are mixed together--
i remember a similar post from Sam a while back showing the graphs for unmastered verses mastered there is a lot of compression which takes away detail>
