Lets talk accoustic guitars!!!!
We just purchased an Ovation Celebrity CC44 accoustic /electric on Trade Me.
IT IS DIFFERENT!
It is black with laminated leaf patterns around the several sound holes toward the top of the body----the case is like Fort Knox, bombproof!
Having played it a little bit i am wondering if the action is a bit low, picking sounds fine but strumming make the strings rattle a little bit----the bridge is not adjustable, THE STRINGS ARE NEW LIGHT GUAGE
ANYONE KNOW THIS MODEL????

How about a truss rod adjustment?
I used to use light gauge on my Larrivee, but when i switched to medium it just really brought out the tone. Lately, I've been tuning down a half step to Eb and that gives me more bend-ability. And makes my songs easier to sing too.

I actually like the action on my guitars low. It makes for a quicker response time and less wear and tare on the finger tips. You can have it professionally "set-up" for @ $100 . True, there's not that much to an acoustic, but the truss-rod can be set and the frets leveled/shaved to remove buzzing, and the bridge/nut set.
I try to do most of this myself to save $, but the strings are half the battle. Never make any truss rod adjustments without the strings on the guitar and tuned because the stress of the strings are essential to the adjustment. I use Bronze with a 4th wound and no lighter than a .012 1st. (med= .54-.012) You get your durability, a warm ring, and plenty of flex for an acoustic. I use these on my thin body Carvin and it looks more like an electric than acoustic.
I also do like John and tune to Eb, but for me it's because I'm no choir-boy anymore and can't hit the Higher notes with my vocals............Hahahaha

Hey Duane,
Just listening to Rush Hour Blues. Love the tone of your guitars on this one. Congrats on hitting the top spot in the Blues genre too.
And I just had a look at your photo gallery and all those amazing guitars you've got. Geez, That '34 Gibson must have some stories. The Carvins look awesome too.

Yeah John,
That 34' L-7 was my grandfathers. I have the original receipt from when he bought it. I don't take it anywhere but I do occasionally record with it. Because of its age it resonates very well. The 58 Gibson mandolin is in a lot of my recordings too. The woods that Gibson used gets a certain hardness and the tones are very rich.
OK,......... that did it. It's time to dust it off and play it.

Thanks John and Duane
yeah down a semi tone is a good way to save embarresment on the highs(vocals)
Now re this Ovation----the neck is straight but even if i wanted to adjust I see no rod??? in fact the neck looks like it may be carbon fibre??
anyways ---mediun strings bring out a warmer tone and I am getting used to the sound---I think it's just more metallic than any of my other gats
The Taylor GSMini is bright and rich and delicate
The Gibson semi-es335 is very versatile---from hard rock to accoustic
The old Cimar, over 40 years old---has a slightly duller tone but can be thrashed all night long and stay in tune
Duanes collection is historic!!! but the Yamaha sounds good too!!
I looked at a Larivee and a K-Yari on trade me but got a better deal on the Ovation
ie ---it was cheaper!!! LOL
what do you others out there, have in your studios

I have an Ovation which is "Nashville" strung. Sounds good for those feathery light acoustic accompaniments.

I play a beautiful Irish-made George Lowden. I was using it in a rock and roll band for a while and since it didn't have a pickguard, I was starting to wear a hole in it below the sound hole a la Willie Nelson. So I put an adhesive tap plate on it, and I think it affected the tone a little, but it can still sing. It's not an ornate instrument, but it sure plays well. A little wider neck than most acoustics for finger-style picking. I bought it after a favorite Guild D-40 was stolen out of my car. I'm still feeling bad about leaving it unattended.

I've got a high spec Fender steel string and a lovely hand made Spanish guitar. I also sometimes use my semi-acoustic which looks like a Gibson but isn't haha!!

not a gear-head, but love hearing about acoustic guitars from some of the experts, who actually play them !
i've got a special love for Acoustic string instruments; my first bass, just 9 years ago, was an acoustic. and when we electrified the acoustic, everybody compared us to the violent phemssss...
anyway, back to the gear-head side of the acoustic guitar...
