The most rewarding Music------!!!
Every Wednesday morning for 3 hours, I take a group of 17 disabled girls and guys for Singing, Drumming and Percussion.
3 are paraplegics in wheelchairs, 2 can't speak, some have Autism, others are Downs Syndrome.
We have a ball, playing marraccas, wood blocks, bells, cymbals, Bass drum, Hi hat, Keys, open tuned guitars, and we sing ---------sometimes it sounds like a celestial choir, ---------other times, stampeding walrusses at a football game! heh
Anyways we are rehearsing for our Xmas concert-----here's the playlist
1. Pokarekareana (Maori Waiata)
2. Action song (also in Maori)
3.Amazing Grace (with Bagpipes)
4. Kum ba ya ( as a round )
5. Imagine (bells and triangles)
6. Better Way (Ben Harper song with Keys)
7. Wimoweh (Drums and wood blocks and Marraccas)
8. !0 Guitars (with 3 guitars, we couldn't get 10)
9. Brick in the Wall ( Full band)
!0.Down at the Poly (original song written by the students)
11. the "encore" Proud Mary (full band)
We have had visitors coming in to our sessions and leaving with tears in their eyes--it can be very moving watching some of these guys struggling with their physical limitations.
also I get paid --------hell I'd pay to do this work!
It is totally rewarding----------and breaks new ground every week------music is a gift!!!
so give!

I wish I could come see the show ... but a few years ago my application for a passport was denied..
sheeesh .. I thought they'd get a kick out of my answer to my occupation...
Never write down "Aspiring Pirate" as the answer to that question .. :)

I wonder if anyone can even imagine how happy they are when they are playing music with you? Music is a universal language and reaches even those who seem unreachable. Music is the one language that connects us all. I understand exactly how they feel. I love the feeling of connectedness to the people I am playing music with. deb

That's a great idea, putting coloured tape on the notes on the xylophone. The combination of colour and tone can be amazingly healing!
