Australian election
John Howard (Liberal) has been beaten in a landslide election by Kevin Rudd (Labour)
Howard even lost his own seat after holding it for 11 years!
The main reasons for the defeat were the war in Iraq, and Climate change.
Howard followed the Bush administrations foriegn policy, and ostrich like attitude to climate change-------to his detriment!
Rudd says Australia will pull troops out of Iraq, and will ratify the Kyoto protocol.
The Neo Cons will be suspicious of this left leaning party, taking over from the Conservatives in Aussie
Any thoughts?

it was about time: we need more than opportunist (c)howards in order to tackle climate change :-)
as an environmental scientist, I can only approve such changes ... of politics!

Peter Garrett also got the post of Minister for the Arts - which means he will be in charge of Government assistance for the development of music in Australia!

Now this is interesting------and may be a guide as to what will happen in the US!
the conservative (Liberal) party has basically collapsed after the defeat, many of the top members have indicated they don't want to lead(the party) and commentators are saying they will be out for at least 2 terms, as they are so decimated-------------this could be a sign for the Republican Party USA!

I already knew Pete Garrett's committment for the environment, his energetic music, and heard about his beginnings in politics, but it's even greater to hear he's now appointed as a minister! If he puts his musical energy into political actions - then planet earth has won a powerful voice for its endangered species, landscapes and climate...
