Billy the Kid
I just got back from the capital here (Wellington) where I was lucky enough to play "Billy" at Peter Jacksons Movie Studios in Haitaiti!
The venue was hugewith a movie backdrop behind the stage-and dozens of bottles of single malt whiskeys lined up at the barwhich dissappeared in the first hour to be followed by dozens of bottles of wine-
The occasion (unfortunately) was the death of one of the original LOTR (Lord of the Rings)crew while travelling in Borneo and it was a total honour to be asked, and I was one of 3 musos there.
After all the speeches and tributes, then food drink and musicit was time to screw the lid down- on the coffin and take William (Billy) to his final resting placeand I was called up to perform, with my close friend Robbie Reedy on mouth harpI played slowly through the first verse, with Robbies harp wailing out and the huge crowd came surging forward out of their seats!!! to within inches of where we stood
It was a powerful moment and I hit the first line and tears in the crowd began to flow, I just kept that vocal clear and emotional above the guitar-and sang ALL the twelve (or so) verses-with one lead break for the harpthen we tacked a long complex ending on it and faded out -then -it was chaos! (chaos is a friend of mine)
I never felt so proud!!

Hi mate !!
---- it was 'Billy' from the album "Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid"
which was a movie score written by Bob Dylan
I was told this was to be the song------- and it was a fine choice
Luckily I used to play it many years back---but we started real slow like a dirge and then picked it up as we got into it---at the end it was rockin'

actually the whole thing was recorded----------- speeches music--the lot
but single malt whiskey in those quantities makes a crowd kinda wild and noisy-----and unpredictable----and a drunk got up with us near the end and was doin' his thing, plus everyone roaring at the top of their voices near the end----
ewe had to be there!
