Video is the way forward.
Music as such is doomed. It's free. Teens don't expect more. And teens will grow to become not-teens-but-more-or-less-adults-who-expect-music-to-be-free.
So. Music won't get their attention. The new generation is visually oriented. It's on their phones. It grabs their attention for at least 5-15 seconds, unlike anything else;
So. If you WANT to attract the new generation's attention. you HAVE to have an attention getting video. You may not want to. Up to you. You can just cater to those like your generation. Whatever.

Video, and virtual reality. The upcoming generation NEED video, they NEED virtual 3d. This blends with what the NSA want. No reality. Just exposure. You can fuck them up by spreading anti-NSA via video.

Well what you say here is true, but on the other hand, video usurps mojo from the music. The combination of music and visuals is often inferior to the same music alone.

yes, sometimes, but sometimes it is BETTER at getting your intentions across.
Powerful music + powerful video is +++.
No foolin, good video is HARD. Especially if you try it like I'm trying, as 3d virtual video.
There are songs that stick in your head, and those can last for decades. But, I think auditory is now last-gen for the new gen.
Pure music is accompaniment. The new gen hears videogame music in their heads.
Don't get me wrong. Music is the soundtrack I hear always. But just as we have earwigs, newgen have eye-ear-wigs. It's how they were brought up, it's just natural to them.
Not everyone, of course. but the majority, yes.

I have this song that says so much. I've been looking for somebody to do some kind of animation to it, not easy to find.

Making good 3d video animation is unbelievably complex and finicky. Especially if you're old and you're having to really study to learn it. I'm not there yet, I don't mind saying. :)
That said, it'll get easier as new tools are developed. Used to be (like, year before last!) you'd take days or months to render a good animation. Now, you can do great animation in REALTIME.
Check this out, this is made in Epic's Unreal Engine 4, and is made in REALTIME, that is, the engine produces this quality video with NO waiting. I hope this embed works.

Everything you see there , kid, landscape, trees, grass, rocks, everything is modeled in 3d. You can actually walk through this world in realtime in the unreal engine. Walk up to a rock and inspect it. Climb a hill, go into the cave. At the quality shown here.
And the best part is, Unreal Engine 4 is FREE to use to make videos such as this, and FREE for commercial use for video. Epic only charges if you make a game from this, which you can, and then it's only 5% of your proceeds.
It is NOT easy to do this. There is a steep learning curve. Much steeper than making music. This is what I'm spending my time on.

Oh, yeah, and watch this video on Youtube and then check out the video that follows it automatically, it's about how the video was made in Unreal engine. Fascinating stuff.

so are you any good at doing this ? If so I've got this song that says it all, maybe I should hire you to do the video. :)

I'm not there yet, unfortunately. :)
At this stage, I can make characters, I can make them move appropriately, I can make simple worlds for them to exist in. I can't do it perfectly yet. There are a myriad of details. And the setup takes a LOT of time.

My daughter is a professional 3d modeler, animator and comic artist. She has a BS in video game design. We have collaborated on video and they are great.
I agree totally about video, btw. This album I am working on was not only recorded using mid 80s equipment/technology, but I documented the process and have multiple camera angles of all of my performances. Editing can be cumbersome, but actually just as fun and easily just as credible of an art.
YouTube pays well for plays. Monetize a YouTube account and expect a return of roughly $2 per 1000 plays. This not impossible to achieve if you are clever. I have a YouTube channel with miniature RC trucks and original music and several of those videos have well over 10,000 views. I have not monotized or promoted at all. I suspect with a solid push, the right videos and consistent uploads will translate to returning viewers/subscribers. It is not unreasonable to pull several hundred dollars a week with part time work.

Wow! Your daughter is in a VERY good position as a 3d artist. This is the future. Nice going for her! Care to publicize her work? Are you dabbling at 3d, or did your daughter do the models?
I agree completely.
FT, hire Noah's daughter!

I totally disagree about videos stealing mojo, Scott.
this video is my daughters graduation project from last year. This scored her a very good job at a 3d printing company called white clouds
I recorded the song and helped her edit the video.
this video is the original full length of the song in my video form (made late 2013)
..kind of my prototype idea for my youtube channel, which I plan to fully launch by the end of the year. I will try and do a song or two a month.
Your models look great, btw, Dan!

I do a little bit of modeling. I use Blender though. My son in law is a wiz at blender, he has a shapeways store with a bunch of fun models. He's working on a photo lithograph commission right now.
We all live together, our dining room table is really an imac parking lot, haha.
it is the future.

Noah, that's just too cool! Let everybody know when your channel's up!
Oh, and I'm not even in the same country as your daughter for modeling. I didn't do a human from scratch (!) in Maya and Mudbox like she did. That started out as a MakeHuman model. And the castle is mostly stitched together from parts, although heavily modified. I'm still getting it together in creating nice materials and UV mapping and lighting, which is a big part of making things look good.

Ed is a nut. She is very driven and that is what it takes.
I'm nowhere near her league either. She surpassed my sketching and drawing skills before she graduated high school.
I'm flattered that she likes my music enough to use it. :)
Great topic!

even though I disagree with you, Scott on the mojo thing, I can see where you are coming from. I would think, though, with the thought you put into your words, video would actually be appealing to you as a way to better convey your message.
I am more into audio textures and visual candy, myself. Never been a big lyric guy.
I was fatally addicted to MTV in it's glory days, and I can't shake the relationship between audio and visual.

I'll give you some examples of videos usurping music. The Pearl Jam video Jeremy was very popular. Now whenever I hear that song I immediately think of the video. Music should be dictating its own path, assigning images to it imposes limitations at times.
btw I have a video page here, I've enjoyed making videos. I just prefer the music genre over the music video genre.

..and I think any music not listened to on vinyl is a downgrade and mp3s are a simply a crap facsimile.
So if we are talking "should", let's just go balls deep and say digital and online distribution/downloading is a complete crime against recorded music purity.

Bringing it full circle, both are the future. We can accept it and adapt or dry up.
