She Loves You is great!

From the perfect Lennon guitar to the perfect (did you play a Gretsch? I've got a Country Gentleman that was my first great guitar that I got because of George) Harrison licks to the sublime harmonies, it's just wonderful.

Whoa!

Well knock me over with an ice cream cone, Dan!

Oh man, after the fun I had yesterday,
I saw the Bat Signal there, and I thought "okay, get ready for whatever..."

Thought I was gonna get yelled at some more. Wow.
This is Refreshing as Money you didn't know you had.
And I thank you for it, way so. Trying to avoid the Kumbaya thing, but thanks.

Well, since you ask,
I will tell you how i went about making this.

First, it helps, like, a lot, that I channel John and George.
I know, a lot of people don't believe that, 'cause it means changing
the size of how much their head can get around in the first place.
And not everybody wants to do that. Change head sizes.
But I really do channel those boys and Lennon's pal Pete
really did come here...

and while he was here, we made a whole album,
I think it's gettin' near time to put that album
out in its entirety, and then I'll have to figure out,
how to make a station, so I can make
a station, containing that album and only that album
in proper track sequential order.

That's not even the first time we've 'redone' She Loves You.
Every now and then, the boys have enjoyed doing that. Redoing one.
Couple times it came out really good.

But a lot of times, it was better in our head, or speaking
for myself, it was better in my head, 'cause I'd go back,
and hear it maybe a bit more overdriven than I'd remembered,
or somewhat sloppier than I thought it was.

Well suddenly, what with God kicking my ass with sublime perfection,
twice in exactly the same way in one night,
(yes it involved alcohol, it involved sick amounts of tequila in fact)

well the lesson there was 'okay, I know I let people by and large
do what they want, what with the Free Will clause I came up with,
BUT YOU, I need not to do that anymore'...
suffice to say by now He won the argument, and the very thought
of getting high, be it drinking, be it pot, be it anything else for that matter,
just repulses me.

Well the upside to what sounds like a really big bummer,
is that now, I have clearer focus,

turns out that helped in the studio..

now here's the funny part. you might not even believe it,
but I have no reason to lie to you or anybody,

God just got me up at four in the morning, I don't know why,
and I'm just going about, then I see the Bat Signal there,
and I go "Uh oh, what now?"

And it's this coolness. Thanks, I needed that, Lyin' Dan.

Well get this...
I was on the phone with my brother, and it was nearly eight thirty pm,
(this is the night we recorded this version of She Loves You)
and all of a sudden, I remembered,
I can only do vocals here until nine pm, 'cause there's kids upstairs,
and it's their bedtime, so I gotta stop, by nine.
So I'm realizing, suddenly, I'm in the mood to record.
And there's only half an hour, with nothing even started.

Well I get my bro off the phone,
telling him the truth; hey I only got a half hour to finish recording,
okay I embellished, I hadn't actually started yet.

But in the spiritual sense in that moment,
John, George, and I, all looked at each other,
and in the same instant all agreed: "She Loves You".

We were gonna go for it.

And this time, for the first time, the recording session,
(not the first session now done sober, but the first time
we revisited one of the old ones, and did it sober, makes a difference)

was powered on one element, and one only.

Tea.

In the midst of the session George enthusiastically said,
"We always had Tea!"

Buckets of it would be my guess.

So, picture it, half an hour,
and nothing standing between us, and the record you just
complimented us on. Uh, except it didn't exist yet.

So it went like so...
Got the keyboard on,
pick a basic beat, nail down piano bass notes...
gives me a metronome pace gives me where the chords are...

that was bing bang boom, I knew what beat, I know all the notes
up down and sideways, so swoosh, done.

Then I watch the magic unfold, and this is where it's fun being me.
See, I thought they were just old, especially about John I thought that,
"you were just better when you were younger", but it wasn't that.
He was just sober in the earliest recording sessions,
that's why the early Beatle stuff, has a certain undefinable something,
that the later stuff did not. Not that the later stuff wasn't great,
it was great, but it was different.

And mind you, clock's still tickin'...
maybe by now, I got twenty minutes left to work with.
And okay, I'm like Neo in The Matrix,
the way I s l o w d o w n t h e c l o c k

and really make seconds be like minutes.
But there's no time to waste.

continuing...

So Boom.
John steps up to the mike.
Takes a couple of false starts to get the levels and eq right,
but then, wham, he nails his part whole, straight through.
Next, it's my turn, time to do Paul's part. Which I know well.
And wham, I hit it too, I might have had to punch in once or twice,
but almost as quickly, I'm done too.
Then George does his bit, and he, like me, has to punch once
or twice, but then, it's done, five minutes to spare,
and the singing's done.

Now, John's said to me that he's pretty sure,
in the original She Loves You, there was an acoustic guitar in there somewhere,
I've studied the record many times in my younger days,
and I believe I do hear it,
so, other times we've attempted to do She Loves You,
(there is, that I know of and remember, definitely one other attempt,
not as good as this by a longshot)

well the other version did have an acoustic guitar in the background.
Not this one. There just wasn't time. I might've gone for it otherwise.
But with five minutes left, I wouldn't even get the tonality set up in time,
forget playing the song.

So instead, well first, we hit the drums.
And you'd think 'how, can you do drums, if you can't even sing anymore
for the night?'

Well that would be because, although I play the drum kit live,
which is why it sounds like that,

that is a skill I learned long ago with a drum machine,
all the early early stuff has me doing that,
playing it live like a kit, but it's a drum machine,
and in those days, even an expensive one, such as the one I had,
kinda sounded still like a drum machine, although,
oddly an organic one, since I didn't program, I played it, with my fingers,
like it was a kit. Well now, the sampling technology being what it is,
(and the drum machine long ago played to death, oh yeah, r.i.p. drum machine)

well I have several pretty damned realistic drum kits, on my keyboard.
And I play it live, like a kit, with my fingers,
and by now it's like, I got a spider on amphetamines for fingers,
'cause I'm sort of tuning into 'The Ringo Channel' much like I do
to do all the Paul singing and bass playing.. in fact, honest to God,
when I'm done with the drums, I'll usually say 'Good Job, Ringo'
as if from some other dimension, he clocked in and nailed the drum part,
albeit translated through my spider hands.

So boombadaboom, and through, and there's the drums,
and it's no noisier than a guy tapping keys on a keyboard,
you know, piano configuration...

So then we hit the bass next, and I'm doing this all by ear,
turns out I have a good set of ears,
sometimes I call it having a 'phonographic memory'...
so turn this, pluck that, till I arrive, at 'that sounds like it',
the bass sound for this song, as it's supposed to be.
A few takes, doesn't take many really, and I get one.
Yeah that'll do.

Now you asked about the Lennon guitar,
both the John guitar part, and George's two guitar parts,
I'm sharing trade secrets now, with you,
and with anybody who reads this, really...
'cause George's sound, has a lot to do with him doubling his bits.
But one thing at a time.

As I mentioned, there was no longer time to 'throw an acoustic' into it.
So we did this, oh I should tell you about the guitar,
you wanna know that.
It's The Pete Guitar. The very one.
Well when Pete was here, he bought us a guitar.
He was relieved we picked the one we picked,
a Yamaha, solid body, kind of shaped like a Les Paul somewhat,
was only five hundred bucks..

(that was a scene, the day he bought us the guitar,
'cause John was in my body, all vividly alive,
and Pete showed up in a limo, and we went to Sam Ash,
and I'd really never seen John so ALIVE, it was freaky,
the two men walked in, Pete and John, like they owned the place.
And John walks up to a ceiling full of hanging guitars there,
looks round, sees one, grabs it, holds it to our ear,
the body of it, strums with his hand an A barre chord,
standard E formation. Says to Pete 'this'll do',
and off they go, didn't even get a case,
bing bang boom, oh, and when we arrived, or when we got
back in to the limo, one or the other I can't remember now,
"When I Get Home" by The Beatles, was on the limo car radio, oh yeah)

Okay, lemme post this and continue,
'cause it'll go boffo if it's too long...

So yeah, that'd be the Pete Guitar we play, like, always.
If it has acoustic, that's an Epiphone.
But the electric guitar work, is always on the Pete Guitar.

Which no longer says "Yamaha" on the top of the head,
it now, and since a day after we got it, says BEATLESEX
in little rainbow letters, affixed to the head of the guitar
OVER the Yahama logo. So it's a BEATLESEX, Pete Guitar.
Well I think that's cool, guess I impress easy.
I'd designed the rainbow BEATLESEX logo,
actually it was in larger form on the SoundClick site. Gone now.
But I had it on a small printout, and that's what got used.
Just scotch-taped it over the Yahama logo. I like this better.

So we (yeah, you're getting a whole book, sorry)
set the tonality of the Pete guitar for John's rhythm guitar,
which I'm surprised you can hear it, that's some good ears,
'cause his guitar part is way lower in the mix (both here,
and in the original Beatle record) than George's is,
(both, George is pretty sure he doubled it then too)

but what we do, is we then tweak the eq for John's guitar part,
extra, so as to get some sort of sound resembling acoustic
added to the sound of it being electric. Since John says that
originally was a sonic component to the first time they did it in '63.

and John just whacks it out, zing, one take. No problem.
Firey definite chops and strokes, cha-cha, chadda...

then George does his, now that's again, same guitar...
Though the boys don't ALWAYS do it this way,
the way they often like to go about it,
is John'll use the 'rhythm' or 'fret' pickup,
you know, the bassiest, and furthest from the bridge....
it's a two pick up guitar, so you got the rhythm pickup,
which more often than not John uses.
Then you got the bridge pick up, and also the setting
that gives you both pickups, also allowing you
to mix, the amount of one to the other, so you can
further shape the sound...
Well George likes to start, with the middle position of the switch,
giving him both the pickups. Then, playing with the eq on the board,
(and on occasion playing with the mix of the two pickups on the guitar,
though usually he won't bother with that),
he lays down, his first 'go' at it.
Once he gets that,
George then switches to the bridge pickup only,
'the twanger' as it were...
and it is this combination, of the 'brinnng' and the 'twannnng'
that gives George his guitar sound.
'Cause he's playing the same thing. Twice.
And the two sounds, put together, make him sound like that.

Couple little known overdubs,
like a bass played like a lead guitar kinda
at the end where it repeats
'with a love like that you know you should be glad...' da da da dum...
...that's an overdub. then we spent, oh good hour or two
just mixing, mastering, deciding to add some extra reverb,
'cause we'd already recorded with some to begin with.
And there it was.

Listened to it over and over again, just to make sure
we kept hearing what we were hearing.

as John puts it 'Just like the first one, only we have better recording
equipment now so it's more in stereo than you could do then'.

Yeah, I forgot this part...

once we'd had it all recorded,
before we got to the mixing.
we deleted the first track I did, with the basic auto-beat,
and the piano bass notes. that was just to hold the thing
in place while we weaved it. got taken off in the end.

oh yeah, and why Pete was relieved that we picked one that
only cost around five hundred bucks was,
as he told us later that day "thought I was gonna have to pay ten thousand
dollars for the bloody thing".

Nope, John had picked the right one.

:)

Yeah, I remember the first time I heard that on the radio (AM of course), it had that "something" in spades. Like I say, it made me buy a Gretsch, too. (glaaaad----, tumptetump de tumpdetump)

Thanks for the extended trip there, that was nice.

What can I say the vocal harmonies are perfect just wonderful and the guitar has the perfect tone for the song. Well done. (applause, applause) take a bow man.

Thank you Richard. Thank you Ken.

*Bow*

(we all bowed, but I'm the only visible one)

No, seriously, every time we do a record,
once we've decided it's done, we take a bow,
to the universe. We do. I know, I'm a bit toodlelulu...
but I channel these guys (which is how it sounds like it does)
and we do bow. As a rule. Thank you again.

Much Love, ~L

BEATLESEX,

I saw you removed your great cover of she loves you because of the other thread going on about covers. This is really sad. Please please with a cherry on top get the license and re-post it as a licensed cover it was really great and deserves to be heard.
TSC,
Ken

Ken, you're a good guy,

and I very very much appreciate your kind words of praise to me recently.

So, for you,
I shall say this, but I shall also do this...

1, no, I'm not releasing it,
I'm not about to pay anybody for the 'license',

I worked by artistic license,
ain't like I was selling the damned things,
I never did... but as the times are changing to where
it's more and more a complication,
that was it, I removed all the covers from all the sites I control.

No plans have I to re-release, ANY of 'em.

Howsoever,

and this I do for you Ken,
and really for anybody else who is nice to me.

Email me,
at:

American_Lesley_Jane@yahoo.com

I'll email you an mp3 of it.

What legalese should I include here...?
Promise me you won't try to sell it.

That's about it, you can have a copy, I'll send you one, no problemo.

Thank you for appreciating our work.

It helps that I channel John and George
(has everything to do with why that sounded as good as it does)
and also, that I'm clear-headed now,
I'm way more exacting in the studio now...

For instance, Dan's record--our version of it
(I can hardly friggin' WAIT to see what Dan makes of it
in his revisitation of his Classic Scmonster of a Tune!)
would not have sounded nearly as 'just so' as it does,
had I still been a stoner.

Thank you again, Ken.

Write to me, and I'll send it to you,
no sweat.

~L

That goes for you too Dan, of course.
You're the first one to compliment me on it.

Pretty much anyone of you who'd like a copy....

just promise me you won't try to sell it....
I'll give you a copy.
Write to me and ask. I'd prefer that it gets enjoyed, really.

~L

I just wanted to add that from what I recall licensing a song for internet streaming from Harry Fox is pretty cheap. I have an inquiry out about the current cost.

Well thank you Scott.

I'm not doing that though.
The way I feel about it, they should pay me. But that's neither here nor there,
I ain't just doin' that... and all I hadda hear was they're crackin' down,
and it was 'jettison the unruly beasts!'

You are of course welcome to a copy of that, (She Loves You)
or any other cover I've done...

Anytime.

According to Songfile.com, it's $16 + a penney a stream. I don't know whether Beatle songs are handled by HarryFox, though. May not be.

$16 a song for a lotta songs mounts up, though.

Yeah, it's VERY sad Lesley's version won't be heard.

Again, that's Songfile.com. The official Harry Fox Internet accessible site to license songs. Larree didn't post that, I did. And Furthermore, I'm just ever so pissed off at not being credited for pointing to that site. The things I do for you guys that never get credited! Sheesh! It makes my blood just boil ever so much. I'm turning red just sitting here and thinking about it. I know, I'll go kick my dog. He had nothing to do with it, but I just know he would if he could.

Dammit.

And yes, Lesley, I'd like one.:)

Dan Dan. You The Man!

Yeah it's sad the BEATLESEX version
is no longer out there to make people go "WHAAA???"

I will miss that.
Guess we have to figure out how the hell to write
new ones that sound that bloody great.
These boys are old, sometimes tired,
but they still have fire in 'em,
and same for me, old, sometimes tired, still got fire though...

so who knows.

Meanwhile, Dan I already said, if you want a copy
of "She Loves You" or any other cover we've done,

name your favorite BEATLE song,
odds are, we've done it at one time or another...

some are better than others...

but sure, I'll send you copies,

don't kick your dog, Man, that ain't right.

Oh... I had missed that part,

you said "Yes Lesley I'd like one"

Well you got it Dan The Man.

Send it to you tomorrow morning...

send yew a few....
Same for you Ken or you Scott...
Larree too, any of you really...

Did an absolutely astonishingly smokin' version
of Elvis Presley's "(Marie's The Name Of) His Latest Flame"
which I almost insist gets sent along... it's tooooo good.
They really ought to be paying me for this shit.

ANY of you,

who would like some of these 'goodies' --- I am only too happy
to share them with you all... just write to me and ask!

again, that's

American_Lesley_Jane@yahoo.com

---send ya a care package. Compliments of LESCO.

This is Not Your Thread, ok. This is Not Your Forum.
You are not mandating me on where and what to say here in the pipeline
especially when you and others were rampantly arguing in previous posts about Freedom of Speech!
You don't have to reply with snide remarks every time I post a comment, especially when it was not directed at you.
Thank you, have fun as well.

American Lesley Jane,
Thank you for sending me your version of she loves me. I am still sad that you took your song down because of the other thread but I applaud you for doing the right thing since you did not have the license for it which kind of surprised me.

Anyway its not really expensive to get it and your versions are really great I hope you will reconsider look into it. I know its a principle thing for you but its just so sad that the artist community lost your great creations.

Please at least consider it if not for yourself for the rest of us that lost your creations.
TSC,
Ken

Well yes and no, Ken.

No, I'm not seeking a license or even many licenses,
my feeling is, I should be able to do it without that,
and if that is no longer the case, to hell with it.

Yes, I am happy to share it with you though,
And yeah, she loves me, I like that.

Probably any Beatle song you like, we've done...

anyway, any of you, may write to me,
and tell me your favorites...

maybe I have 'em...

I got two dead bored Beatles,
you think we never 'redo' one just 'cause? Well, turns out, we do. A lot.

All the friggin' time, it used to be.
Not as much anymore.
She Loves You, was an exception to that.

Right now I'm gettin' round to putting out our New BEATLESEX record.
and it is somethin'.

So, like I said, Ken, I'm more than happy to share,

but really, they should pay me. So, nah, I won't be doin' that other thing.

It's strictly originals from here on...

so between you me and God, Ken,

I'd better be sure and write good ones.

Haven't we better be sure of that, Boys?

They nodded pretty emphatically.

~L, out
