I can't finger out whether it's worse to be called an idiot or a racist.
It's probably worse to be called a child-molester. I think I've got that hierarchy OK.But. Were all those charting songs back in the 60's about molesting 16 year-olds songs about child-molesting? I suppose so. Why aren't we looking those guys up? "She's sixteen, she's beautiful, and she's miiiinnneeee." Urk?
Shit-eater is prolly near the top, too. Except I don't want to offend Chuck Berry, because he was a seminal rock artist. Is seminal an insult? Depends on if you actually know english, I guess.
Nazi. That's an old stand-by. Not near the top, though. We hear Nazi this, Nazi that, as a staple. Not much impact, though. Worn out, I guess.
Idiot doesn't seem all that harsh, except in the very recent. You can't really call anyone an idiot anymore, because it's offensive to idiots. And somehow is following on the heels of " retard", which is definitely anathema.
"White man" is sure enough on the verge of the tippytop of insults. It doesn't offend me. Not much does. But that's just me. I know that for a fact.

Lots of insults that used to be offensive have now become terms of endearment.
There's a certain fondness implied when someone calls you a "Stupid Twat" or a "Douche-bag" or an "arse-hole" "Sad git" "Silly Bitch" "Dozy turd" etc but it's usually said with a wink or a smirk. The more extreme, the less seriously you take it.
When someone calls you something of that ilk you know you've been accepted and you don't take offense except in a pretend way.

I dont get it, now Lesley is offended by some name calling here, i think it was in fun and directed at someone else, i think Dan was talking to Jilly and got mixed up, remember LyinDan is an escaped _______blankety blank and lost his mind awhile back when working on a transformer and got a bit of a shock, or maybe it was the therapy he had to undergo , nonetheless I dont think dan was trying to purposely insult you ALJ. lyingdan is actually highly intelligent and well educated. he would never droop to such low standards and call you whatever it was

Did you think it curious that I didn't respond when a certain person called me an "idiot" because I didn't like the title to his little song? Musicians need to learn that not everybody is going to like every song or idea they write. Lord knows that I have written some stinkers in my day. But, you see, there is this called being an adult. Name calling is usually what children do. But I loved it! This means I have been promoted from retard to idiot. Wooohooo! Dat burn it I have arrived! By the way, I also don't allow myself to be manipulated through instigation. Especially not by horned animals. If a man gets in my face I will put him on his back the way a real soldier should. But this cowardly internet crap doesn't move me at all. I laughed so hard that I thought I was going to have a baby. So, why not just give it a break? I am sure that more drama will come soon. Some of us are just prone to it. But me? I'm gonna be a good idiot and stay out of it unless someone uses the magic word again. At that point, all bets are off. :)

An actual adult doesn't respond to imagined insults this way:

That's the way a three year old talks and he responds to anything he doesn't like by hitting it. God knows there are enough of them piloting adult bodies.
BTW, the subject of this wasn't aimed at anybody in particular even though it pointed out some recent examples here, as well as things that didn't happen here). This "trigger warning" thing that's become popular is ridiculously alarming. ANYTHING you say could set SOMEONE off. Even out of context. That's illustrated in this very thread by Lesley's taking offense at something I said. It ain't just you. But the "three year old" thing IS aimed at you. Note, I'm not calling you a three year old, I'm saying you're acting like one with that particular retort, which is clearly aimed at me and clearly is a threat.
Yes, the opening post could be considered trolling, I said as much. But the subject was insults, not the persons doing it. Idiot me, I thought maybe talking about insults could defuse things (as in the Jane Curtin - Dan Aykroid thing) rather than letting them simmer behind the scenes.

I think LyingDan was making a point,by giving some examples and ideas, how people react. I found it funny kinda, in a way, mind you i can see how some would get the wrong idea, and it seems it got taken out of context as he explained. there was no bad intentions meant, as he said, one can interpret it as so. and Lesley took it personally, without understanding this was not even about his person. And honestly, Lesley says he aint coming back,.we will see, I doubt it, and he has said that a few times previously, and what do you know, there he is again, so quite frankly he cant resist this place it is just to cool a place. who can resist, i know i cant

But being called an idiot or 3 year old by someone on the internet is basically funny to me. It is not something to get upset or alarmed about. I wasn't threatening anybody. Especially you because you haven't done anything to me. Ever! So why would I threaten you? I don't even know if you are a real person or just that animal picture you have up. But your post does seem to be a form of instigation because it brings up something that no one was even talking about anymore. Alas, I will give you the benefit of a doubt though. You may deserve that but I really don't care about what you or anybody else thinks about me.
This use to be such a fun and peaceful place. There was lots of sharing of musical ideas and great camaraderie. Then along came politics and snarky people who seem to live miserable lives and have miserable attitudes about anything and everything. Now there is lots of drama, insults and anger. I refuse to be a part of any of that. As far as I am concerned, there is absolutely nothing to defuse. I said my peace and I am done with it.

You have done it, and so I have lost all respect for you. Once I have lost all respect for you, there is no way to come back. How could you do that? Don't you know EVERYONE knows that it is completely unacceptable? Civilized society does not include those who threaten others. It is beyond the pale. It's even beyond the pail. I pee in a pail at night, and it is so far beyond that pail, I can't tell you how far it is. So stop trying to apologize, there is no use for it. When my pee falls beyond the pail, it falls so far beyond it that I can't even see it. Thus have you fallen beyond the pail. I can't see you or even think about you. Right now I would settle for the latter. But I would probably start complaining that not enough people are posting again. They say you can't have your cake and eat it to. By the way Bluto, I am not convinced that a large amount of these posters are even real people. They don't look like real people. Anyone could be assuming all of these identities. I mean, even you are a cartoon character. I kind of understand why you do it but why are so many of the rest of these posters characters? What or why are they hiding behind these fake identities? Very suspect if you ask me.

There's always been trouble with so called 'anons' and 'characters' on The Pipeline and I'm not sure why it's any different here than any other forum.
When you sign up anywhere they ask for a "USER NAME" Obviously if you're an artist or band you need your username to be searchable, that's your brand..... but on a chat forum or as a listener (like myself) people often make something up like mary64 or oddjob or skippyT.... it's the usual thing to do. If I told you my name was Roger Clarke would that make what I say any nicer?
Some of the more entertaining characters here can become real in their own right, take Fly on the wall, I think he wouldn't be so interesting if he posted as Nancy Walker somehow.
