Any Steely Dan fans here?
Fantastic synthesis of jazz, soul, playing technique, studio recording technique, song-writing, rhythm...you name it, it's there.
Anybody?

I liked 'em until about Aja. My favorite is the Pretzel Logic/Katy Lied era.

I am a lifetime fan of "the Dan"! In our cover band I play Reelin' In The Years, Ricki (don't loose that number), Do It Again, Black Friday, FM, and a few more. We mix them up and play one or two per gig. PM me your email. I have a rendition of Ricki with just me and my acoustic. I'd have to pay to post it here.

I've always loved the Dan. Skunk and Diaz played some of the tastiest guitars in all of the '70's. They were absolutely unique. Nobody else sounded like them or wrote songs like them. My fave was The Royal Scam, and still is. Like Loren I lost interest with Aja. Not sure if it was them or me, but it was the same time I lost interest in just about every other '70's band - at the end of the '70's.

Ha Ha, Steely who?
way back when I was a "insert age related name" I played in a band which did a version of Back Jack, but we speeded the whole thing up, and used the bassline from Ricky Dont Lose That Number,
Two covers for the price of one, ha ha,
same band also played Rose Royce, "Wishin On A Star"

Katy Lied is my favorite from them. With our collab ,"Dear Momz", I tried to bring that Steely Dan "vibe" to the song....

When I was growing up (in the '70's) my parents were strictly C&W- not that there's anything wrong with that. However, when I heard "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", a whole new world opened up. I've been a fan since then, right through "Two Against Nature" and beyond. Excellent songwriting and great grooves.

....Yep, a top class act. Great music which still stands up well.
Are they still recording? I haven't heard anything recent but think they are likely to be past their best. Still, the Rolling Stones are still as great as they ever were, so perhaps I shouldn't say that about Steely Dan.
The Average White Band were in some ways similar but with a more 'Black' sound.
I used to smoke a lot of da ganja in those days :)

Donald Fagan and Becker are still working together. Thier latest is "Everything Must Go". Great stuff cause they've still got that old Dan edge to it.
Yes Marc!! Check out Phil Streets tunes everybody! I've been putting his stuff on my stations for quite some time now. Excellent writing in the Steely Dan fashion.
Maybe I'll pay for the cover thingy and put my shot at Ricki up.
Nice thread Dan!

I never liked them.
Until the last 5 years or so. I just kinda "got" it. The subversion; the humor. Everything. I mean, I always appreciated the musicianship, but never really got the genius of it all.
And I think that says a lot for just how brilliant it all is.
I now completely love The Dan.
Plus, they named themselves after a spiked metal dildo in Burroughs' The Naked Lunch.
Now, that kinda says it all.

Has Fagen still got it? Well, his vox is getting a tad worn, but still...
