Wow, been there, and it's heartbreaking. We had a big dumb, handsome, lovable huskie who helped us raise our son. He was 16 and so arthritic that we had to let him go. One of the saddest moments of my life.

I've an 11 year old cat in the throes of kidney failure, and on her way out. Her brother died of esophageal cancer last October.
Nightly, for a month now, I've been sitting with her and injecting 150cc of water under her skin in order to force water into her body. It helps cleanse her system of toxins.
It isn't about her living as of this point. It's about bettering her final days.
It's what we, as humans, only appreciate.
She's tired of me sticking her with needles.

The favorite household cat, and queen of the menagerie, ALUCARD, is 20 years old and I'm STILL dreading the day she finally goes. But SHE is a TROOPER, and carries herself very regal-like, LOVED by all in the house, and MOSTLY respected by the other animals.
Hope that your old friend's passing is without much pain. Seriously man, cherish the last moments with the old codger....

Real sorry Dan. I had to put our 13 year old Papillon down last month and it stll haunts me. It seems like most artists everywhere are animal lovers and that's a great thing except for moments like these. Like the vet told me, the best thing you can do is remember the good times and then go rescue another animal as soon as you feel you can handle it.

Thanks. He's not gone yet, but he's going peacefully. He beat the odds for a Dachsund-Corgi breed. He's a good dog. Very smart. I swear he understands most of what we tell him.

Dan, I am so sorry about your dog...It's a horrible thing to go through...heart wrenching. Yes animals are very smart...I am sure your dog understands everything.......my cat is brilliant
I had two cats die on me a month apart and then my cat Betty became sick the day Midnight died...she ended up in the hospital and I visited her every day...ended up spending $5200 that I didn't have on her ... I took her home with tubes coming out of belly...spent 2 weeks with her day and night taking care of her...she had inflamed tissues and could not pee...well I took her to a holistic vet (another $600) who gave her strong fish oil, cranberry powder, and vitamins, and within four days she was unblocked...she recovered..the regular animal hospital sent her home to me still blocked after spending $5200!!!!! Of course they would never think of giving the cat fish oil but that is what eliminated the inflammation that nearly killed her for nothing!! I wrote the song "Got a Little Cat" for her...and her photo is among the pictures on my page. Betty was only 8 years old when she got sick...and having lost 2 cats a month apart it was really unbearable.

I'm very sorry to hear about your dog Dan. My pets are very important family members to me. I couldn't love them more if I gave birth to them myself. It's heart breaking when we have to say good bye. He is blessed to be so loved by you. Eye

Sorry to hear that Dan.
We have had a couple of great pets as the kids grew up over the years. We've bought a few life-like ceramic "copies" of our dogs and the kids have painted them just like our pets and we've had them coated and fire glazed.
It may sound wierd to some of you but in our own little way, we still have them around. It was actually good therapy for the kids at the time.
Of course after a few months, we found another candidate to hug and play fetch with. This time we got brothers............ Fender and Gibson.
There's nothing like the unconditional love of a pet dog. Most would give thier life without a second thought and all they require is love and kindness in return.
Funny how our pets can actually teach us something about life................
Give 'em a piece of bacon for me Dan,
D.

Wolfie was an old girl (sorry, Wolfie) who posted on the old MP3com that putting down her dog was the hardest thing she'd ever had to deal with, and I mocked her for it (in the face of starving Africans, etc. etc. and seeing how she was like 40 years old or something). Thus, she can get me back now.
Beth, you're insane, but I really, really appreciate the post and the sentiments.
Now, shut up about this, I really really miss my dog, but it's been three weeks now.

"Terry I'll never own another dog -- all pets end in tragedy." That's what my brother said after losing both his Golden Labradors.
My poor Border Collie was killed and eaten by a bear that terrorized the neighborhood for two weeks before I shot that SOB at point blank range in my porch.
Our old cat died in my wife's arms at the age of twenty-three. She used her litter box on her last day. Buried with full honors.
I'll never own another pet. I like my freedom.

The down-side of loving is letting go. The down-side of living is dying. It's the process that can hurt so bad sometimes. I said goodbye to my cocker spaniel rather unexpectantly and quickly last spring (kidney failure). The greatest comfort came from my mother's words- "you have done the best you can by him and he knows how much you love him". I'm very sorry for your pain, and I think it's just one of those things you can't understand until you go through it. I'm sure noone will hold a grudge. Jo

:(
sorry bud, I had to put my old cat down last year...
kind of a sucky thing to have to do.
I dont know why the hell we keep domesticating carnivores and falling in love with em, I swear it's a mental illness.
I got another little kitty this year and I love him more than air!
I talk to him all day and feed him better than I eat myself..
It's pathetic...

been there Dan! (sympathy too)
It's part of the deal when you have a pet for years as part of the family---
My old dog "Steely" was a great hunter----as he aged he got kidney failure
---so we went out hunting one last time---but he never came back, if you get my drift
I buried him way out in the bush---and cried for his loss---no shame!

I've had many pets over the years...it always hurts to lose them...but I just get another one...the love and friendship and companionship is wonderful...it just sucks when they get sick...I was numb for 4 days when the "Kitty" died...I could barely function...went through hell when all my cats got sick...including my favorite one which I couldn't let her die at only 8 yrs old....it's too bad pets don't live as long as we do....now I only have one cat and I try to give her holistic food and hope for the best.
