Have You Ever Written a Song based on a Dream You Had???
Have you ever written a song based on a dream you had? Recently I wrote and recorded a song called, "Many Happy Returns" based on a dream I had. The dream was very powerful. I had the experience of dying and moving into an afterlife. There was a guide there who brought me around to all these strange places. The images from the song all came from the dream. I didn't stretch the lyrics much beyond what occurred in the dream as I remembered it. After I woke up, I had these images bouncing around in my head and started writing them down. In a couple of days I wrote the lyrics and it took me a few weeks to get back to it and actually work out the music. Here is a link to the song:

Many Happy Returns

Have a listen and let me know what you think. If you have written a song based on a dream let me know here and I would be very interested in listening.

I should mention that the dream had elements of past lives/reincarnation. That's where the "Many Happy Returns" comes in to some extent. Not sure the returns are all happy, though. -JP

It's always interesting to hear what inspires people to write the songs they do... this has such vivid imagry lyrically and by subject it's quite applicable to a heavy sound... it would be interesting to hear an electric version with guitar, bass and drums.

I had thought a collab with other resident musicians might be good for this song... glad you agree and did not take offense... none was intended, just a quick observation. I am most often on the run and when I post I don't always have time be careful in my wording.

Thanks very much. Yeah, this would be cool with a heavier sound. Perhaps someone at IAC could take that on as a challenge!!! -JP

JP, that is a VERY cool song. I get very strong visual cues from it and can relate to what it is about.
I have written many songs based on my dreams. One such song, which is also about my guides, is called 'Blue' and is on my IAC page. Here's the de_scription of 'Blue'....

"This song literally came to me in a dream. I woke up several times writing down the lyrics in my head for a new verse each time. When I awoke fully, I expected what I had written to be gibberish but I was pleasantly surprised by the coherency of it all!! I also still had the music clearly in my head and managed to transcribe it from the lucid, astral world of my dream to my multitrack intact!"

and HERE'S the song.

I just saw SP's post, perhaps there's your drumming contribution :-) ... I've meant to say how impressed I've been with your drumming T... so there now, I've said it.

Thanks Titania for your comments on the tune and for posting the link to your song Blue. I think we were definitely on the same wavelength there. Perhaps my guide knows your guide, eh? Your song is great and you sing beautifully!!!

As always ... another marvelous tune from you Patrick ... I love your lyrics, your simplistic, straight forward approach, your ability to present your tunes without all the extra's and yet sound as if there is so much more there ...

Thanks for your music my friend...

Nice song JPS. Reminds me of early Dylan. I once heard a song in a dream and got up in the middle of the night to wrote it down before I forgot it. Every word and note came out all at once without edits. Ths is the only time in my life when this has happened this way. It's called "Where Do Lost Dreams Go". I only have it on a DAT tape. (remember those?) I'd like to post it when I transfer it from DAT to CD.

Hmmm interesting song. I like it. Yes I have written songs from dreams. One is "Got a Little Cat" which I literally woke up singing. Another song I dreamed is "Bully Outlaw" and I haven't recorded it yet....that on was a dream. The cat song I just woke up singing it in my sleep and my cat was sleeping next to my head....I have to think if there are any others from dreaming.

I was thinking of plugging my DATmachine directly into my MAC but without an interface I don't know what the quality wil be. I have few good songs on DAT tape so I may experiment and see what happens. Thanks for inspiring this idea, JPS! I had forgotten all about those songs.

Quite often, actually, but I have to admit that my dreams are very strong and I am thankful that I often remember them. It's important to have a sheet of paper next to your bed as they easily get erased from memory. Long ago I made the mistake that I overestimated my memory. :)

Thanks Richard K. I have actually kept a pad of paper near my bed in the past but have not done so consistently. Perhaps I would have more songs based on dreams if I did so! -JP

Finally grabbed a moment to listen to that tune! YUP. Very dream-like, surely because (DUH!) it was based on a dream! Do you have LUCID dreams ever? You seem VERY in touch with your subconscious MUSE.... many folks can barely remember their dreams at all. The pad by the bed is a GREAT idea, 'cause I've found after a few moments of wakin' up, MOST dreams are lost to the oblivion of real life -- unless it's a very impactful or repetitive dream... whoops.... sorry my psych B.S. sometimes makes me act like a wannabe junior-Dream-Analyst...

ANYWAY -- Dug the folk song style with clearly a DREAM-based story! Loved the harmonica too --and the dylan-esque--johnny-cash vibe -- I'll definitely be checkin' out the rest of your tunes as promised! KEEP on ROCKIN' !

BY THE WAY -- J.P. -- All my songs are streamin' again finally -- so PLEASE check out the BLUES ones especially --- I KNOW you'll dig those & believe they're station worthy... but check out the OTHER ones too-- you'll be suprised at the Frank Zappa-like diversity of styles I went with. Please? THanks !
