Steinway or Casio? ProTools or Radio Shack? Gibson or Walmart? Ludwig or Tupperware? PART1: GUITARS
Something that isn't discussed much here is the nuts and bolts and tools we use to construct our masterpieces. I'd really like to know what kind of equipment and instruments you use, and what your opinions are of them.

To avoid getting too lengthy I want to start by focusing on guitars. If I get any interest in this area I'll start ones about keyboards, drums, recording equipment, and so on.

By no means am I doing this to brag about our arsenal. In fact it might look pretty pathetic to some. There's not a Gibson or Fender in sight!

Photos would be cool too!

Guitars:

Cort G Series, mustard
I really like this guitar. I can't afford to spend thousands on the big names, so I spend hundreds on the small names. Actually it's Mark's but I usually play it. Thanks Mark.

Epiphone G400, cherry red
Sucks. Looks beautiful, plays well, sounds ugly. Hardly ever play it.

Epiphone Alleycat, charcoal
Great guitar. Hollow body but not much bigger than a Les Paul. Nice resonant tone. With the right distortion I can almost sound like Zappa. Mark usually plays this one.

Lotus (unknown), sunburst 1983
Nice guitar for a budget Les Paul copy. Good tone on clean settings, a bit harsh with distortion

Aspen (unknown), custom paint job (by me) 1982
It got me started. Cheap. High sentimental value. I always thought it was crap, but have read some things about Aspen (now defunct) lately that have caused me to reconsider that.

Epiphone PR-5 Acoustic/Electric
Very thin sounding. Doesn't have that resonant woody sound I want from an acoustic. Mark plays it but we don't use much acoustic guitar, mostly because we haven't had a good one.

Cort 12 string acoustic
Mark just got it. Sounds beautiful but haven't really recorded it yet.

Ovation acoustic
Now this was a great sounding acoustic, but Mark wore it out.

There are a few other old junky guitars laying around our basements, but that covers the ones we've used.

And you...?

I have a guitar that says "made in Italy" on it (do you think it might be valuable?) - a sort of wood effect colour and it's been hanging on the wall in my music room for quite a few years now, I don't really know how it works so that's as much as I can contribute but I love the topic and I bet our Hugh would enjoy this one too!

Washburn D-31S acoustic ... looks good, plays well, sounds great (in the right hands)

Johnson Brother (J.B.Player) acoustic coverted to electric... looks good, plays rough, sounds fair.. (This is really a one of a kind as I made the pick-up myself out of a Piazzo Buzzer element)

Old Harmony Bass... looks real bad, plays fair, sounds ... uhhhh bassy

Lets see.................
1972 Gibson RD ...........boat anchor but plays sweet!
(2) Fender strats........... put double DiMarzio's in one and call it "The Monster"
Ibanez AE .................... I do most of my acoustic recording with this one
1980 Yamaha 335 ........ Good all around tone for an acoustic
1934 Gibson L-7 ........... "My Baby"

1958 Gibson F-12 Mandolin... This was my fathers as a kid and he used it professionally. I record with it sometimes.

1962 Fender P-bass .... Real fun to play with
Ernie Ball copy (4-str) ... I use it as a back-up when gigging
Ibanez BTB (5-str) ........ Just sits around
1990 Ken Smith (5-str) .. This is my gigging machine. I put new Bartolini's with an EQ in this one and usually play chordless cause I act like an idiot on stage.

I also have a few tube amps to go with some of these........ Duane

Duane,

I'm drooling at those Gibsons--------I play a "59 Gibson 335 with two humbuckers we call it "the V8"
but it can sound accoustic as well
My accoustic is an 40 year old Cimar----gets better each year (no longer produced)
Jake plays an Ibanez Studio through a Roland pedal
Leo has a multitude, Martin accoustic, Epiphone electric solid body, Latest long neck Cort bass with built in pre amp, and a Rickenbacker 12 string, plus about a dozen didgereedoos(thought I'd just pop them in )

Gear!

JAM - I was going to make bass a separate topic but since you mentioned your Rick 4001, I'll mention mine, and how much I love it! It has such a heritage. So many greats have played a Rick bass.

Sam - what is a Piazzo Buzzer Element? I love the sound of it. Would make a great band name. And I saw your guitar stand a long time ago, love it!

Verity - I think anything made in Italy is valuable! It doesn't say Stratovarius on it anywhere does it (misspelling is intentional)?

Duane - I'm jealous.

Silverwood - I love that didgereedoo! And I'm glad to see someone else plays a Cort. Very underrated guitars.

I misspelled it though it's Piezo .. Sounds like it belongs on Verity's "Italian G-fiddle"

Very cool Bat! The Rick is a Great Bass, from McCartney to Geddy Lee to many others. Lee uses round wounds to get his signature sound; Mccartney used Flat Wounds. These are essential to get the McCartney sound, as you may have noticed I am somewhat of "Beatle" guy :) The Casino and Rick were used from "Revolver' on. If you are interested, I have a few songs using these guitars that get close to that Signature Beatle sound on my page. Two in general, "Ms.Fortune" has a strong McCartney Bass sound, and I used the Casino on my song "Peace of Mind" :) Cheers! JAM

HAAAAAA! Cathryn - I'm at work so I have to try not to laugh out loud so now I have tears in my eyes! It took me a few clicks to figure out where I was supposed to find this elusive gear list, but once I found it I realized it was worth the search. I'm astounded by the fidelity of your recording, and the lyrics, and the cor anglais... Welcome to IAC, Cathryn! Can I call you Kit?
