"He wouldn't go out of his way"...
...to speak to you".

I found myself thinking about this expression recently, well today actually. What made me think of it and what does it mean anyway?

I was in the queue in my local spar this morning with a box of start under my arm-obviously hadn't had breakfast yet and the above saying came into my head. I thought it quite absurd, for why should someone go out of his or her way to speak to you in the first place? I mean, would you, driving down a one way street, realising you've passed a neighbour without waving, say to yourself;

"Jesus, I'd better reverse back up (go out of your way) this one way street here and greet my neighbour"?

Of course not because you'd be going out of your way to do so. Might even cause an accident. I stood there in line, wondering when the last time was when I "went out of my way to speak to someone, or when someone went out of their way to speak to me? I couldn't remember. Maybe because people as a rule tend not to go out of their way to greet each other. That's the point, they would if it wasn't out of their way.

Furthermore, if someone did go the extra mile, do an about turn, approach you to say "how you getting on?", you might just look at them funny, and think, "what's wrong with yer man"?

Maybe I should get out more...

It goes with the times my friend. In this busy world people have to make time to be kind. Sadly, everyone has the time to tell someone when they're put out or they don't like something. I'm guilty of that too. It's odd you metioned this subject because just this morning I was thinking about making another station called "With a little help from my friends". A kind of thank-you station for people that I know and would like to know here on IAC. The point here is I'm putting my own busy busy time towards "going out of my way". You can uplift a lot of spirits just by telling someone how good they are and truly mean it.

No truer word spoken!
I guess the expression came in to my head partly because, like you, I too make an effort to greet people, friends and strangers alike. It's great to get a "hello" back, especially from someone you don't know. So, put that station together man.

Thanks for going out of your way.

The very best,

Steafán

Hey, I actually saw a young man hold the door for my husband at the gas station the other day!! A lot of common courtesies seem to be lost. Greeting people you meet on a daily basis is one of them. A smile and a hello is just that. A simple way to be part of the human race. (even dogs greet each other by sniffing butts! right LarreeDog?! lol) I was taught to use; Yes Sir & No Sir (or Ma'am), Thank you & No thank you, You're welcome, Excuse me, and to respect my elders. Guess it all goes back to..."smile--make the world wonder what you're up to".

Oh Steafan, you sound as analytical as me (or as nutty) and now you've got me thinking up other interesting phrases in a similar vein, like.."He wouldn't cross the road to speak to me" - actually I've had some great shouted conversations like that. "He wouldn't give me the time of day" - would you actually be asking someone if you thought this about them? "I wouldn't spit on you if you were on fire" - if you were close enought to do that you'd be on fire too! "Wouldn't give her a second look" - why the first then? "Didn't know him from Adam" - well you wouldn't know Adam from anyone would you"...My list goes...sadly!

Welcome to IAC by the way, your music is as interesting as your thoughts - Jilly

Hey Jilly, thanks for stopping by. (Wrote 'stopping time', but changed it!)
I appreciate your comments. Sweet. Ireland (where I live) is full of such comments. Makes it a really interesting place to be. The older I get, the more interested I become in the language-sayings in particular. If you're into that sort of thing, you should check out a friend of mine who now lives in Boston, originally from my hometown of Downpatrick in Northern Ireland: http://ghostofmintyhatton.blogspot.com/

I'll be back with more real soon.

Take care now.

Squirlymurly, thanks for taking the time. Hope you didn't go out of your way, and if you did-thanks!

I guess by looking at the comments I'm getting here, that there are more like minded people out there than you'd sometimes think.

Take care.

Yes, I agree communication in Th world seems to be in decline....We rarely talk to strangers, strike up a conversation, a Warm hello.....Its a strange world we live in. I held a door open the other day, and the person walked by me without as much as a thank you., or a glance or smile. But... In some ways communication has not been better. I have met more friends on the internet through songwriting sites the last few years...,More then In the "Real" world. Are evolving as a society, or devolving? I wonder what the world will be like for my Son. I have to teach him to be wary of strangers, while at the same time teaching him the world is full of kind people....
