Sometimes you just want to Slap the World
I am starting this thread in the hope that you will share with me
your frustrations at not having enough time to work on music.
Its really hard for me to find the hundreds of hours I need to
compose and record my music. I would like to have more spare time
for making music and when there are a different kinds of things
which take me away from that...
then I really just want to slap the world...
I felt so strongly about this I wrote this song "Slap The World"
anyway I hope you will take the time to share with me your feelings
and experiences.
I am envious of those who can work full time on their music but I
suppose there could be problems as a full time muscian and perhaps
you would like to share those with me as well and the good times of course.

The trick is to know that music is making itself all the time ... you just have to find the time to sign your name to it ... I will now take the time to go for a listen ...

i,sadly, have all the time in the world, but nay equipment. boo! my acoustic guitar alone remains, though i hope soon to get another little recording setup going. i used to love getting so into working on a tune that a whole day passed in a flash, cups of tea went cold and i didn't bother eating. i seem to have lost a degree of enthusiasm, and gained a little cynicism. i think creativity and frustration are joined at the hip.

When I was younger (and had 'nothing else to do'), I could afford to be a more intuitive musician, and spend loads of time, playing and recording. Now, with a full-time job (and a tad less energy), I value what free time I get more highly. So I end up planning out what I want to do on a tune. I get more done quickly, but I miss being able to just explore a song.
I need a vacation.

I have the same problems as Tom(great sound). My digital 8 track has started talking like a parrot. By the way I really like your song
Slap The World
Its not so much as I would like to slap the world as stop it spinning so I can jump off

Hi, after another full-time working day in succession...
Thanks for taking up a position on the theme...
May be, the problem is not only of having enough time ...may be... to have a pursuit you wished for...instead your daily work...
On the other hand I think the more things are unattainable, the more they become greatly desired...
Thanks to everyone, who took the time to listen...

Exactly! If we reached all our goals quickly, what would be the point of 'going on'. Besides, the time and effort put into an enterprise increases the pleasure of completing it.

Time is a strange thing...
For example, when I depressed I feel like I don't have time to exorcise, then I feel tiered because I don't exorcise and so I feel like I don't have time to practice and write because my other work is piling up...
BUT, if I exorcise, and then come home and work for a few hours, I have all afternoon to practice and write! Suddenly I'm doing twice as much in a day....
really, I have two school age kids and a Teaching gig three days a week and a business of my own, but if I can just get over the curious malaise that seems to haunt us all I can get quite a lot done!

I thought this thread said
"Sometimes you just want to slap the WOOD"!!!
yikes!
But I suppose that can be the result of another kind of frustration, huh?
I will go and listen to that song, Nigels.
*whew*
And no to actually address the point of this post:
I am a dad who works full-time. That takes up enough of my time. But then, my wife works full-time. too. So then, I gotta give her some breaks, too. Yikes.
With all that, it eats up enough of our income. Fine. But then, I have a laundry list of medical issues which are, thankfully being kept in-check by medication. But those meds cost us another 1/4 of our income or so. So recording equipment and studio time is pretty far out of reach. And also, it sucks the energy out of me, so that after the kids are in bed, all I can muster the energy for is to take off my clothes and shut my eyes.
I feel a bit like the heroine of A Streetcar Named Desire, who has always depended upon "the kindness of strangers." But that still won't give me the energy that I need to get my projects complete in any amount of time.
But really... no complaints.
:-D

Wow!
Hop On Pop, thank you for your nice comment on my song!
...
"I am a dad who works full-time. That takes up enough of my time. But then, my wife works full-time. too. So then, I gotta give her some breaks, too."
...
In this situation I could just replace the roles...And add the number of 'two school age kids" just like 'never never band'...

Hi Hip on Pop
I am saddened to hear of your medical issues, you have such a bright optimistic approach to everything I never would have guessed. I hope you get healed soon, or at least things steadily improve. I think health is more important than anything. this is why I live in remote country areas, clean, water food and air.
I hoped you liked MK's song, I think she is a genuine composer of very original, thoughtful yet accessible music. I would be interested to know what you thought of the song given you wide and well grounded appreciation of music.

Thanks for the well-wishes all. The medical issues are, as I said, being kept in-check and I'm doing just fine. Sorry to unload. Hope it wasn't a case of too much information.
As to Mila's song, this is what I wrote in my review when I added it to my station (The Good Stuff Trois):
Ambient. Seductive. Lovely. Mila has composed a piece here that is everything ambient music should be. It sucks you in and allows you to get lost in it; forgetting it's there. But when you do come around and give it an active listen, there is a lot to discover and enjoy. Welcome to The Good Stuff family, Mila.

Hookay... nothin' like a little perspective (like hearin' the hardships that some of the other musicians on IAC are goin' through)... uh... Todd, PLEASE be well and ROCK on, come what may! And Mila, welcome to PHLEGM PHAVORITES. The title alone, and this BLOG of things near & dear to my own heart, pulled me in.
Glad to hear others who I respect as musicians on IAC are often overwhelmed by the necessities & responsibilities of life, while trying to pursue their music dreams. Man, if I EVER get financially well-off (believe me, it's lookin' VERY unlikely)... OH the things I could do to support the ARTS!
FOR now, it's mutual hand-holding, listening, praising for the good stuff, with occasional artistic tiffs; and workin' away at LIFE & music, like the rest of y'all, in this WORLD that needs to be SLAPPED.

Hi again...
It was raining here...all day long...but all that dampness suddenly passed out of sight and soul when I got back here and read that new great comments of yours.
Like this one:
"Man, if I EVER get financially well-off (believe me, it's lookin' VERY unlikely)... OH the things I could do to support the ARTS!"
Yes, the ARTS need to be supported as they concern the state of health and mind ...
And I wish and recommend to practise music as a healing therapy any time you need and like...
Hop On Pop, I hope you'll get over the problem...
Nigel, I am envious of you...
Thank you all for the ray of light after my long rainy day...

We had a kid at 19. Striving for time is all I've ever known. But I have worked things such that I put in quite a bit of time in music. It was through working at getting things like this.
I would love to have more time and am always scheming towards that.
I love having kids though, and I love being married.

Thank you for your comments and topic's refreshment !
I am glad that " Slap The World" started well on IAC and it seems it's going well.
Anyway,
Yesterday I was very suprised and happy to find myself on the front page as a 'KIAC Featured Artist of the Day'!
So, in view of that ... now... I just want to hug, but not to slap the world / in spite of the many of the reasons for doing that/!
SW, that featured pic was chosen from my flash player /but not by me and it is not a pic of me/...I liked its expression..that's why I've added it to my photo gallery. But you've catched its message very well!
Thanks again for your nice words and support!

I find myself in the position that when i have plenty of time for music that i simply don't get inspired. It is infact that in times that i have little time for it that i get the hunger and desire to do it.
Therefore I'm happy to do all aspects of life like working, parenting and relationships because then when i have a moment for music then it becomes a very special moment
May i also say that I just stopped by for another listen to your songs. I enjoyed everything and found the experience of listening most moving and relaxing. You use a great control of the panning to create the unexpected and you take great care over your choice of instrumentation to ensure that the sound is neither cluttered or sparse.
Out of all of your songs I found "Piano Melody" to be my favourite.
What a beautiful piano piece.
You are a very talanted and caring person.
love
Ray
