So how exactly do the monthly plays work?
I'm really confused by this, and hopefully someone can shed some light. My songs (and one in particular) get thousands of plays every month, if the monthly plays data is to be believed. But the daily plays log doesn't show the vast majority of these plays.
Where are these plays happening then, and how do I track them?
Cheers in advance,
Chris

The Daily Plays thing is out of order, has been for awhile now, programmers have been trying to figure out how to get it to work right.
Please take site issues to the support desk. iacsupporthotline@gmail.com

Thanks Toby. It wasn't really a site issue, and certainly wasn't a complaint. Just a question about the way things work. ;^)

Now that the Forum not longer, I'm finding that it is time to get a Pipeline page. :)
With respect to this issue I must convey that, the current version of the Player does not log plays from unregistered location even though it issues them to the database and they are counted in your chart action and monthly plays. Partially this is because the logfiles would become too massive. Several solutions are being considered.
One must state on the bottom line that the count of plays reported on chart action and monthly plays is the number to go with. It is precisely accurate.

I know that issues like this are not for the pipeline, but I for one really appreciate seeing them here. I was confused by the same issue for quite some time. I asked tech support about it and got a reply right away which is great, but I knew I wasn't the only one wondering about it. This way everyone learns. Maybe we need a little offshoot of the pipeline, just a little skinny pipe, that's for technical issues. Hey, how about a forum?
Just kidding.

sharing this information here is most helpful-------------it would stop hundreds of us hitting on the techies with the same question!

We used to have a support forum, the problem was, this would cause people to scatter their support inquiries around and then they'd be unhappy if they put something on a post that wasn't seen, or if they mailed it to one of several IAC Email addresses available. So to make sure we had the best people available to answer the tech questions, and to make sure everything went to the same place so we could make sure we responded, we created a dedicated support hotline and placed links to it on all the administration pages.
I would add that a lot of listeners come to this site that are not artists, we want to keep the front page as inviting for them as possible, so it has interesting things for listeners to read, and not a lot of stuff that excludes them from the conversation. It's not appealing for listeners who are here for music to see things like "My _____ is not working right", so we'd prefer that artists just write the support desk.

Ah, THERE's that political issue. It's refreshing to see it spelled out.
However, you'd still get less work on the already overworked staff of IAC if you had SOME sort of support forum, even if only staff members could write to it. And that would be my proposal. Instead of answering the same questions 50 times via email, why not a dedicated support faq, forum, blog, or whatever form you want it to assume, to which only staff can post. Updated quickly as issues come up.
Then you won't get the argumentativeness you clearly want to avoid, and yet you have something that serves your users well. Without overmuch staffload.

There really aren't many universal support issues of this nature, hardly any that I can think of. Even this one only applies to Prime artists. If it's a new feature, we do announce it here.
It's not argumentativeness we want to avoid. If people want to argue about what artists they like or politics or religion, that's fine. But we have a very detailed FAQ and a support desk for site issues and questions of that nature and I think those 2 should suffice for this purpose.

I'm not saying thanks toby "It's not a complaint
it is why are you taking away song plays from people and putting them lower in the charts
and are you doing it for everyone or just certain individuals

i also want to point out that for the month of aug my plays for sunset was 3634
and this is more than my total plays for the time ive had it up since about may
so i want my 5000 song plays back so i can have a fair shot at your charts.

I explained your misunderstanding in detail on the other thread where you posted basically the same 3 posts (which btw was a pretty obnoxious thing to do).

So getting back to the original question, is there any way of tracing the plays that are occurring off of IAC? It would appear that the vast majority of mine are happening elsewhere, but are somehow linked back to my IAC page. I really would like to know because I am getting a LARGE numbers of plays somewhere (which is great!).

I think you'll have to stake out this page:
http://iacmusic.com/nowplaying.aspx
I haven't stumbled on where I get 4000 or so plays of one of my tunes a month (or was, until something seems to have changed in the criteria of unique plays), but it's possible.

I know this isn't the place for this, but since the conversation is here, I tested this "currently playing" page by playing songs from various sources and watching this page:
When I played my songs from the player on batlenny.com website it registered the plays
When I played them from the single song pages they registered
When I played them from a chart they registered
When I played them from a station they registered
But when I played them directly from my artist page they didn't.
That seems odd.

We just played your top 2 songs on the page and they immediatly showed up in now playing . Take a look, they're there now. Do detailed research. If you know this isn't the place for it, don't put it here.Send a specific report. How many plays; what songs; when.to:

Ok I'm done. I thought saying "I know this isn't the place for this but..." would work as a preemptive defense from the hand slap but it didn't work. Moving on...
So how about that David Bowie? I think he's great!

Hmmm. I thought this was my blog. I'm IAC Prime, so don't I get to decide who gets their hand slapped in my blog? For that matter, why is anybody else saying what should or shouldn't be posted in my blog?
Just wondering...
