What is the best song you've ever written, and why?
OK folks, let me have 'em! Point in the direction of your best song, and I'll listen to it and comment on it. You have to tell me why it's your best song first though! I'm not sure if these blogs support links, but if not just copy the url here and I'll check it out.
Mine is my most recent, and it's called Love You More. url is below. Let me know what you think!
Love You More
Looking forward to adding a TON of great songs to my station!!

I actually think that my best-ever is going to be on the album that I'm in the middle of recording right now. But, as far as stuff that you can actually hear NOW?
It's probably
"Ashes On the Water"
Why?
It just all kinda seemed to come together for me on that one. It's an odd composition, musically, and yet it still has a hook. I like the lyrics pretty well. And, it just... feels right, you know?
Although, like I said, something on the new record'll probably take it's place.
I hope.

That song of yours is a good one, Chris.
Here's what I wrote about it at my Good Stuff 4U station:
I love the vocal mix on this one. It's a very cool song, in general, that reminds me a little of a more-pop Alice In Chains/Meat Puppets hybrid. And a Meat Puppets feel will pretty much always hook me!

I honestly can't answer the question. However, As Artists and writers, I do think we tend to like our latest creations. I am more attached to the slew of songs I have in the pipeline then those already in the can :)

I agree with Jeff, I always seem to think that our best song is the one we are working on, and on that note I am very excited to finish this latest one and post it here on IAC. But as far as the songs we have here, I think our "best" in terms of all the different aspects of music (minus production quality) is our song Forty NineHundred.
It isn't as popular as some of our others, but I have been told it takes a few listens to really get into it, so maybe that is why, because there is really a lot going on with it (a lot of instruments, mutlilayered lyrics, etc) but the whole song needs to be rerecorded.

Wow, great response folks! OK, here goes!
Hop on Pop, I really like Ashes on the Water. Great pop vibe, nifty song crafting, and tight playing all around. Love the crisp break at 1:04. Really nicely done bro. Into the station it goes!
And thank you for your kind words!

Hi Steve Ison, I see now that I broke my own rule!! Oops!
Anyway, I like my latest best because it represents a shift in my focus, to some degree, and it shows that I'm learning. I used to be all about the rock guitar (check out my profile image for proof of that), but I think I'm discovering slowly but surely that vocals and melodies carry songs. And I'm also learning how to sing. Better late than never, eh?
Thanks mate.

Pretty Nose is very good alright. I love the extended intro, leading nicely into those soulful vocals. And so much honesty in the lyrics. Easy to see why you picked this one. Thanks for sharing it! Station bound!

Hi Jeff Allen Myers,
I agree with you, and I think I might have fallen prey to this tendency. My problem is that I can't get past the flaws in a given song I've recorded, and they end up spoiling the track for me in the end. Sad huh!?
Thanks for the post.

Hey pHLeGm, thanks for posting! In His Head sounds GREAT bro! Super tight playing, a great hard vibe, and some killer vocal effects make for a REALLY nice listen. And wailing guitar to top it off. Man, this is right up my street. I would love to make music like this again. If only I was still young! Thanks for sharing this. Into the station it goes!

Hi Otis and the Professors,
I am listening to Forty NineHundred now. Very intense track bro. So much passion, and so dark to start. But somehow the change at 3:20 resolves all that. A touch of hope, I reckon. Very nice indeed. Thanks for sharing it!

I can't listen to your tune from where I am at present.
I may not have great perspective on what I'm thinking is my best written song to date because I just wrote it a couple weeks ago. "When Loius Armstrong Speaks" is on my page at the top. I like it because the lyrics seem to encompass more than I know and continue to say different things to me. I also like the melody, fits the voice very well, and I could imagine others doing it.
But then "First Contact" might be the one, and for the same reasons.
But my nephew swears "Bonafide Candy Store" is my best. It is not my favorite, but he and his friends swear by it.

Hey Chris, thanks a lot for listening, we really appreciate it. Definitely check out those Bob Elliot tunes, and yes my personal favorite is "When Louis Armstrong Speaks"
Oh and I kinda lied before and that wasn't cool, because "Turtle Song" is our best song, I just get kinda defensive of that other one. You guys have songs of yours that you love that just never seem to jive as much with others?

Love You MOre's an excellent track Chris-Very atmospheric and really good melody..
I never know what the 'best' songs i've written are-tho some are definitely more popular than others, but Heart On Ice is my favourite at the moment(lyrics by Steve April)..
I just love the strange atmosphere and vibe of it and how it shifts focus so many times..I love the utterly bizarre lyrics, that somehow tell a story with the music..Its got a real sense of magic and freedom in it for me-and i've grown to love it more wheras some of my tracks i've grown to love less..

Hey Chris
Boy, it's pretty hard for me to pick which song of mine I think is the best... but I'll say Home because it's got the perfect blend of atmosphere, textures and music! Well, I think anyways... I feel it's well rounded and strong on all points, though if I recorded it these days it'd be better IMO.
Hope you like it!

Bob, I think the best songs I've heard of yours are Blue Water and How Lonely. I listened to your latest Louie Armstrong song and while I liked the mood of it and the performance a lot, it was sort of just one verse repeating, I was wanting it to have a bridge or something to change it up a bit.

What are you lot like?
I just wonder if you feel the same way about the best 'lover' in your life. Tell me would you say that it could have been one of several or would you say it's always the 'latest one you're working on' :)
Come on, commit yourself! Chris wants to know the best song you've written so you have to be able to say what qualities make that one song outstanding - I think it's impossible to have songs of equal greatness. You can use the argument that 'sometimes' one appeals more than another but the BEST one has to be the one with the most appeal most of the time.
So get the pro/con sheet out and mark your song out of 10 for every element. If you can honestly score full marks on more than one song then send them to me and I'll give you a reality check. Fickle lovers.....ask yourself which one you would take to a desert island for the rest of your life!

The best song I've ever written is THE DEEP.
THE DEEP
Most people found it to be sort of Obtuse, which I never intended, I had hoped the imagery and the mood would get the point across even if the references were too obscure or personal.
It was intended as a piece of a lager themed CD on a single mans search for meaning. The references are largely bits and pieces of my own sort of journey along those lines...

I understand Slywit, of course YOU can't chose a favourite child just as YOU can't choose a a fave song but the question said 'best' and undoubtedly someone else may be able to judge which kid is the best and which song without the emotional implications
