What is a respectable number of song plays for a month?
I still can't make any sense of the way song plays work. I know an unspecified portion of all plays are generated off site. But I have not clue how the plays actually break down.
The song linked below generates over 1200 unique plays a month, which seems like alot to me. I really like the song, and it's probably my most "successful" song in my short internet music career. But 40 unique plays a day? Really??
When The Rain Comes Down
If anyone has an explantation that makes sense, I would love to hear it.
Cheers,
Chris

Chris
IMO----anything over 500 is good---1000 is very good for a relativly new artist
back in 2007/8 we got 8---10, 000 for a tune- "Gondwana"--when it was hot
all we need is more listeners---

OK, but still wondering where the plays are coming from (?) . The song I linked only has about 8 stations playing it. And traffic to my page is negligible, so they're not coming from there.
Just seems strange...

Chris ...
Bots are a persistent problem on the net in general, and IAC regularly has to employ Herculean efforts to defend against their influence. They scour the net, and "hit" the mp3 files ... triggering a play count.
They're the main thing that slows sites like IAC down.
I'm not suggesting your plays are bot driven, but when there is an incongruence in traffic and song plays, bots are a reasonable explanation.

Ahh, Colin , you are so right. If someone (1) listens, then it's all worth it, right?
Everything else is gravy.

Thanks Silver, Kev, Code, and Kurt! I agree that 1 play is enough in principle, but I would rather get 1200. ;^)

Hey phlegm!
Just curious, but how many plays did your song sitting at number 5 all genres get in February? I'm interested to know what you need to get that high in the charts.
Cheers,
Chris

That's a fair question Chris, and here's my wanting to stay REAL, without pissing off the powers-that-be on IAC too much (I hope) answer:
I think number of stations the song is on, and station plays (obviously) and other factors I'm unsure of oh yeah plus how many stations have the song in their top 20 or so.... I mean just a lot of factors are involved, BESIDES total number UNIQUE plays per month.
I could be wrong on some of this. I guess at that point, it's a question for IAC Support, and they might say we shouldn't blog about it.
Anyhoo, presumably, the main factor on chart placement, I'm sure you're right on that, is NUMBER of unique plays for the month.
For the current date range February/March 2009, In His Head is at 4870 (wow! almost 5000) unique plays.
DAMN. That's a lot of fuckin' listening ears that AREN'T in my household.... maybe this ROMULUS X RECORDS UK Label thingee that's soon to occur is ALREADY getting our music out there.... THANK YOU LISTENERS and THANK YOU Kenny Colgate, the Wizard X of Romulus X!
Urrr..... sorry for the ugly, shameless self-promotion sidetrack there.
Back to the main point Chris - If you look at the some of the other factors I listed above, IAC was REALLY well designed. BECAUSE: As you support OTHERS in their endeavour to spread their indie music, and network/collaborate/encourage/and LISTEN to them, you really ARE helping to promote what YOU have to offer to.
Weird huh? ALmost as if they created the one indie site out there that was designed to balloon out, and eventually help ALL indie music. Like some kind of phreaky-deaky, internet hippie-love-music-fest commune.....
Sounds a little too Utopian? Yeah, I know.
But they really did design this site pretty well, and doing COOL Radio Stations with your OWN unique themes, and LOADS of GREAT IAC Artists, is the BEST way to get your music out there, man.

I agree with Conversation Suicide: IAC rocks!
But in answer to the question, I think "The Code" nailed it: 1
If someone heard your music, that's more than respectable, ...that's fulfillment.
...Everything beyond that is just a bonus. ;-)

My most successful (in terms of plays) songs get between 200-300 plays a month. Some only get 30-40. Those are not huge numbers, but just to know that anyone is taking the time to listen makes me feel like continuing. I'd stopped playing live a few years ago and didn't have an outlet anymore musically.
IAC has provided a place where I have a voice again. I have a lot to say and no other audience to whom to say it. For now, anyways.

October saw 60, and 90 for my 2 up here. November jumped up to 280, and 307.
Probably due to getting back in to the site a bit more after a wee brake of a couple months.

I like all the money I get for the many plays each month, because I "opted in".
Wait a minute.
They've actually never SENT any of the promised money....
DOH!

Yeah, what's up with that? I'm pretty sure I paid real money to "opt in". How do we access the money we've earned?
