The Story of Han aka 'The Judge'
Gear:
Bohemian double-bass (120 years old ) by an unkown builder, flat-back.
Thomastik Spirocore strings, Fishman ‘Full Circle’ pickup, Fishman Pro Platinum Bass Pre-amp, Glockenklang ‘Heart-Rock’ amp & Glockenklang 2x10 box
As a kid I jumped on and off music lessons, because I didn’t like what was offered to me (clarinet, piano). At the age of 14, I got myself a guitar to impress the girls.
I learned some chords out of a book and guess what? IT WORKED!!! Later on I started playing in bands with which we would conquer the world, ha ha!!
When I was 21 some guys asked me to play bassguitar in their band, which I thought was a very stupid idea, because who wants to be a bassplayer?????
To do them a favor I borrowed a bass and an amplifier, and after the first note it felt like I was hit by a truck, I really fell into place, it was like coming home!!
From that day on playing bass was my first love, I started to take lessons, developed my skills. 2 years later I picked up the double-bass. It's hard work, but it pays back ev’ry effort you put into it a hundred times.
I studied the conservatory with Koos Wiltenburg who’s been a great teacher and mentor for me.
my roots:
the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Uriah Heep, U2.
Today I play mostly jazz and Brasilian music, but I love to hear the funk guys too.
what hits me:
‘the Emotion that is combined in Sound & Groove’
my credo:
‘Never give up’, if you want anything: go for it. it’s 1% talent, the rest is hard labour.
my nick-name:
‘The Judge’
I’m influenced by a lot of bass-players, the main are:
Charlie Haden, Scott LaFaro, Ron Carter, Paul Chambers, Ray Brown, Marcus Miller, Anthony Jackson, Richard Bona.
