Growing up in the Mississippi Delta - Clarksdale, MS
Well, since I am new to blogging here, I would like to tell you something about where I am from and about life in the Mississippi Delta.
In the music scene here BLUES is the focus. Since this is the home of Muddy Waters, Pinetop Perkins, and many others. Also, it is famous for the 61/49 Crossroads. Everyone knows why that is so important in blues history yep Robert Johnson supposedly sold his soul to the devil.
We are a small town, 65 miles south of Memphis, Tn, of about 19,000 people and of course everyone knows everyone else's business. Well, yea, you guessed it my roots are blues! I will tell you that I do embrace my roots since this is how I have evolved into what I am today.
I have never blogged about my life or where I come from but maybe it will be interesting. So this could be the first of many blogs.
In Clarksdale, there is a blues club named "Ground Zero" maybe you have heard of it and maybe not, but is one of the coolest clubs. My brother played there last night and he is quite awesome. Although he plays bass in my band, he has a blues band. See here in the "Home of the Blues" if you don't play all blues you can't play. Which will bring me to another blog for later.
Just to get a picture of the club, it is in a turn of the century building that was once used to house and grade cotton. The front porch is everyone's hang out. The old furniture has to be replaced regularly since it is always old to begin with, but for the most part very comfortable. The inside floor is uneven and the walls, tablecloths, and everything else in this place is written on by everyone who has ever visited. None of the tablecloths match nor do the chairs. This club is owned by Morgan Freeman and Bill Luckett. Eventhough, I am not allowed to play my music there they do support me by letting me use the club when I am showcasing, doing reality shows, or anything else I may need to do that would require a place to play.
So there you have a speck of my life. I hope to post more later. Thanks for listening!!! Jax
