Licensing cover songs
Does IMP have specific policy regarding mechanical licensing?

Basically, if say I were to record my own rendition of a popular song and upload it here would I be in some violation.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but licensing these types of recorded cover songs are to make sure the artist who wrote the song (or publishing company) the proper royalties IF said recording generates money.

Here is my position:
I have never sold a song. If by some crazy fluke someone wanted to purchase my version, I would of course license the song but I see no valid reason to license without the demand.

Is that legit?

Again this is the kind of question that is better directed to the support forum, but yeah you should license any cover song that you expect will be available online a fair amount at harry fox agency.

Check out the terms of use if you need more specificity about this, I think what it says is that the artist is responsible.

As I understand it. You must obtain permission from the copyright owner which is usually the publisher "Before" you sell your version of the cover song. Scott or someone else would have to tell you IMP's policy. I don't do cover songs but I have licensed my own songs through my Publishing company to other artists to record and distribute their own versions of my songs. It can be a tedious process though and I have known of people that have paid lots of money to make it happen. CDBaby has a service called limelight that supposedly takes all the hassle out of it. I have never used the service so I don't know if it is true. Here is a link to them though:

Hope this helps!

Yeah, you echo my sentiment, Stoneman, I've not ever really recorded cover songs with the intention of releasing it. But not before licensing, agreed.

I should be ok to record, put up for a review to see if it is even worth a shit. I mean it's only like $15 bucks through limelight (I think) to pay the ASCAP fee.

Just a stupid technical hurdle I don't want to have to jump through just to find out I wasted my time polishing a turd.
