Sellouts, what does it all mean?
It's the oldest stigma I can recall when thinking back through the years and to the early band days in HS, and it was worse than admitting you respect Mr. Rogers.

I see different types of sellouts. There are those who are looking to get paid, and those who would sell their mom's retirement to get paid.

I am of the prior. I am a fucking 'sellout', for the record as defined by my punk rock peers from christmas past. I would and do create music others would conceptually like, as long as I like it too, whats the problem.

anyway, my two bits on that

In earlier days, like in the times of the hippie, people cared a lot about things and a lot of things affected them. For instance you got drafted to go fight a war that wasn't really about you. Sellout lines were drawn and since the outcomes were immediate and important, you might even be justified calling someone a sellout. In the internet age, it's become an idiot term because most of the people using it are corporate entities from the getgo, it's a comedy when they try to talk about fortitude of consciousness.

In the words of a great poet (Ice Cube) from my home town, when he was called a sell out because he was not into doing free style: "I don't do free style, I do get paid style. Sell out? If you want to survive in this industry you better learn how to sell out of something be it CD's, Tapes or merchandise. In that respect I am a sell out. Otherwise my family would starve to death."

In my personal opinion (for what it is worth) people who call others sell outs are usually jealous of everything they have accomplished. I consider myself a "buy in" as I have bought into making music for the rest of my life. If I never sell another download or CD it won't stop me from doing what I love. People that make it to the limelight are not sell outs to me. They are "buy ins" who have reaped a monetary return on their investments in themselves. I have reaped enough to buy a home and secure college tuition's for my young loved ones. Anything left over after that is gravy for an old dude to sop up with a biscuit while vacationing in a tropical place. But I would love to be labelled a sell out by someone. That would mean I truly have made it.
