Produce Like a Pro
I found the greatest youtube channel, Produce Like a Pro. It is hosted by Warren Huart, an industry pro, who recorded Fray, Aerosmith, etc. He isn't an endorsement whore, he straight up contributes quality production tips and tricks as well as philosophy.
It is dudes like this that keep my faith in the music business going.
here is his latest video on top ten mixing mistakes:
I suggest subscribing and viewing. He actually replies to your comments and cares about the community.
Cheers!

Seriously, this dude is the real deal.
He, like us, lives in the trenches and works his ass off.
There is a big debate going on over analog vs. digital and it is really polarizing the mainstream.
At the end of the day some, if not most of the guys producing and engineering are doing it from their homes and are essentially free agents and/or independent by definition (regardless of top 40 success)
I have to share these videos with you guys, I really think we can benefit from his insight.

Really? People are still going on about 'Analog vs Digital'.
Shit man, they had us at 'the tapes are all gone, you can't buy them anymore'.
That's when I figured out, let's just say this is John and leave me last fucking name out of it, how to work with digital shite and then teach Lesley how to do it.
Incidentally, we all are rather eager to hear your new work,
you know with the gizomry your kids of age to vote, God Bless Them,
got you for your birthday.
So please, once you've made a new record with the new equipment,
please post it here on the bloody Pipeline or something...
Can't see how there's still an argument for analog, really.
People are funny. You can do so much bloody more with digital.
And by now we almost know what we're doing!

Sorry. Three in the bloody morning.
"Gizmory" I meant to write, which probably isn't a word either.
And thanks for posting these videos of Studioman.
We'll check 'em out when we have the head for it.

I totally agree about analog vs digital, to a degree, anyway. I mean, using tape is a pain in the ass. But, I love using my analog console because it has a special warmth to it, but what is funny, is the digital wav files are near impossible to differentiate digital from analog with tuned monitors and most of the people mixing and producing are making plugins for their protools that emulate all of the great old analog compressors, mic pre-amps and effects to add grit and character to their sound.
Anyhow, I record digital because I can't afford a large format tape machine and even if I could, I would probably not use it very often at all, and probably only for effect.
I love the capabilities of digital, just flat mad in love with the digital revolution.
We are very lucky to have such affordable tools for our tunes.
As far as my project, it has been a steep learning curve getting this gear and software straight, but I can see the light at the end of the tunnel, haha

Well, you'll learn it. You'll have to. You'll never face your kids again otherwise.
We're probably a combination of analog and digital come to think of it...
sort of...
When we began our recording career
(in the early 1990s though we didn't see publication to the world
until 2001)
we worked with a Tascam 488, the original gray model.
It got eight tracks out of a standard high bias cassette tape of C60.
You had to use 60s, 'cause the 90s were too thin and slipped
a bit and it resulted in a warbly sound.
One day, years ago now, we suddenly realized, no one
was selling high bias 60 minute cassette tapes anymore.
I figured death was then imminent.
But as John said, he figured out a way.
The funny thing is, it's a free program.
Guy takes a free program that my late wife had found me
so I could make wav files,
and somehow John figures out that it can actually be used
to do multitrack recording. The brilliant bloody bastard.
So he comes up with this crazy cockamamie way,
to use, what I think was our third generation of Tascam machine,
the black model, Tascam 488 Mark 2,
as the mixing board... no more using the tape recorder,
but it still is the mixing board, and it goes through the free digital program,
and we do digital recording, well over 24 tracks, sometimes twice that...
after a while it doesn't wanna give any more tracks, but by
then if you haven't made it sound good, take something off, 'cause, Damn.
It's all a matter of absorbing it, even if it's complicated...
read the manual a million times, by about the thousandth
it may begin to make sense. Sooner if you're a normal smart person.
I'm an idiot/savant, that pretty much sums me up.

Wow, this guy knows his shit alright. To the degree that I can understand it,
I am duly impressed. He refers to a lot of equipment I've never heard of,
never seen, never worked with, wouldn't know it if it walked up and kicked me...
certain constants and concepts of course I have my own understanding of,
such as 'widening' techniques...
you know, it's funny, someone else did a post in the pipeline
about what equipment do you use, and we said 'two tin cans and a string'...
after seeing this guy, not to mention that spaceship console of a board there,
we realize we're not far off from two tin cans and a string.
we make it work though.
I think I'm probably the Forrest Gump of Rock N Roll.
My way of doing it is very simple, which is good, because that, I can understand.
I like what he said about innovations coming from amateurs,
some would call me that. I've been doing this too long to call me that,
but some would. I notice a lot of people use programs which contain
stuff that I just do manually. Whatever music you hear in any of my records,
I just played it and recorded it, then added stuff.

This is really good stuff. It's sort of a compendium of common pro tips.]
This is some good stuff, too:
Bobby Owsinski 's Blog/Book - The Mixing Engineer's Handbook"
Modern Recording Techniques - I think every pro Recording Engineer has this in his library
Another one is "Behind the Glass", no link, google, Like Owsinski's, it's a compendium of interviews with the great mixers/producers.
