Drums On Demand
I hate not being able to work with a real drummer, I recently tried out some "loops" that would be a compromise. The loops are of "real drums" with excellent players. I am impressed by an outfit called "Drums on Demand". The loops are organized in song sets that are meaningful, and within each are loops for verse, chorus, Bridge, fills, intro, etc... As there are many loops within a set, you can create a track that does not sound like a drum machine or a typical loop as nothing needs repeated. You can add snare hits, hi hat, and different fills to mix things up to get the feel of a live drummer sitting in on the session.
I have finished the drum track of my first song using Drums on Demand. I used"Audacity" to assemble the drum track. I then mixed it down to a two track WAV file, imported into my DAW, and then laid the guitars, Bass. And Vocals around it. The cool thing is it served as the Click track. The song is called "Bye Bye Lullaby" and I will post the finished song this weekend. I am very happy with the way the drums came out, I will be using Drums on Demand exclusively going forward. I found that the loops are stimulating my writing as well. The first song is just a "Pop" ditty I was not crazy about..I picked it because I was not sure how the drums would work...well, it elevated the song considerably.
I recommend Drums on Demand to anyone that is not blessed with a real drummer. The good thing about the loops? they don't talk back, disappear during tracking,Get stoned, and bitch like some of the "Real" drummers I have worked with in the past. :) The drums on demand website has samples of the drum loops. "Audacity" is free to download. If you use Pro Tools, you don't need it...you can create the drum track within Pro Tools. I have a Korg D3200 so I needed to import the track, as its not easy to move the loops around within my DAW. Audacity worked great.
I will give a heads up when the completed song is posted this weekend, probably Saturday evening March 21st.
Regards,
Jeff
