IAC GEMS #12 You'll Find A Way by DICK AVEN
You'll Find A Way by classy Californian multi-instrumentalist Dick Aven is such a beautiful touching song.Subtle, graceful and kind hearted, like a good friend bringing sagely words of comfort and understanding to soothe a troubled soul..
The whisper wistfulness of the opening 'You'll Find A Way' line reminds me very much of the late, great Elliott Smiths wonderful songs on the 'Good Will Hunting' soundtrack.Instantly atmospheric, evocative and affecting..
The singalong McCartneyesque verse with its whistling chipperness and sunny smile is the perfect foil for the more minory chorus..Really strong, inspired songwriting here performed n sung with quiet confidence and a sense of inspiration..
What strikes me about Dick - is not only can he write really cool songs (the similarly excellent A Ghost Around was another candidate for here) but he produces and arranges them all so beautifully too.
Inventive arrangements, skilful playing, sonically clear and unfussy..Everything perfectly in its place and designed purely to serve the song.
Infact i'd go as far as to say his songs are produced just as well (to my ears at least) as anything in a roughly similar modern folk vein being dished up these days by the record companies..Only difference being Dicks a better songwriter imho than these people from what i've heard..
Whats the furthest thought, whats a work of art got to say ? to an open heart needing a kick start, you'll find a way...

A review like this is just what I need to inspire me on to write more songs. I appreciate it very much, Steve. I don't know how you find the time to create all of your beautiful works of art and lead the IAC community with reviews, listening and support. You are an inspiration. Thanks.

Loved everything about this one. Of special note to me is the slightly delayed vocal harmony. I haven't heard anyone do that well in quite some time. It was timed perfectly. The lyrics are damned fine and the song structure is so uniquely familiar (if that makes any sense at all). Awesome songwriting, production and musicianship. Another great pick!
Much Respect,
Stoneman

Thanks for the listens and comments you guys. This song is admittedly one of my favorites for a number of reasons (many of the ones you mentioned). I've been playing it a good bit lately in my solo set. The encouragement goes a long way. ;)

I've enjoyed Dick Aven's work for years and this song is a fine example of the reasons he is one of IAC's most respected and talented artists.

Guess I just couldn't get past the genre ( I don't know why I can't relate to folk ...) but just discovered Dick's version of Round Midnight - it's playing as I'm typing ... in Heaven! So perfect and beautiful and gem-like for me. Couldn't agree more with all the above comments about him.

No problem Delores..Wouldn't do if we all liked the same things !
Thanx for listening..I'm a very selective 'folkie' picker anyways - and - as a genre - its not really big for me-but i just love songs that create a certain vibe -whether its rock, pop ,folk or whatever

What a pleasure this song was. But ... I just can't hear a whistle as anything but casual - too casual for such an intensely beautiful piece. If you're going to whistle in a song, you really have to be a canary of excellent voice to pass my muster.
But the song itself was just lovely. I did hear the shades of the great Elliott Smith in those harmonies. I also loved how raw it starts. Just a dude and his guitar - sometimes that's all you need.

Thanks, all. Tom, I use whistling when I think it's right. This song has it doubled with bells. I think of this song as perhaps one of the most casual ones I have. " It's all fun playin' 'til someone starts takin' you seriously. I'm only sayin' don't take all my shit so literally". The song is about inspiration trumping criticism. "You'll Find A Way".
