IAC GEMS #14 Rabbit Run by DREAMTOWN
Rabbit Run by DREAMTOWN is such a beautiful track i first heard yesterday and was totally inspired..
Have been trying to find a new way to discover really cool songs to add to my stations and hit upon the (actually pretty obvious ) idea of clicking artist links to songs i've already added to find them (I mean if they've got one track i love -there's prob gonna be at least another on their page i really like, right ? )
Luckily i'd already added Dreamtowns song 'Negotiations ' to my ALtErNaTIvE AnD ReTrO station
but hadn't heard any of their other songs..
Even luckier i discovered the bands principal songwriters are pipeline regulars Bob Elliott and Tom
O'Brien (Which means an unprecedented 2nd song entry here for true artist Bob Elliott)
The band have a fascinating, original sound incorporating elements of Indie Pop,Soul,Jazz,African,Reggae,Country...Sweet melodies, fabulous rolling polyrythms (courtesy of brilliant percussionist/drummer Matt Perez),creative overlapping harmonies and ace complimentary duelling lead guitars...
Rabbit Run sums up whats so great about them for me..There's such a sense of joy and freedom in what they're creating..This is music so obviously made purely for the love of just doing it and some of that freedom gets sprinkled over the listener-opening up their imagination, healing them and taking them on a mythic trip to an inner landscape away from the mundane world for a little while..
It basically just makes you feel good lol
Was speaking with a musician mate in the pub a few days ago and he was saying (in reference to the utterly stellar song 'Go Now' which i'd just played on acoustic ) that great music instantly creates its own world for you to enter into..
Thats certainly the case for me with Rabbit Run....
Its sunny, earthy, warm n strange with a totally organic transcendence in its groove, melody n vibe..
The sudden chromatic instrumental section that appears from nowhere is a real piece of magic- as is the way it comes round all major 7thy again n ascends toward heaven on those cool harmonies..
Having 2 seasoned n gifted songwriters like Bob and Tom in the band is a trump card indeed, since other groups who put alot of work into 'texturing their' music often get totally stuck in a loop unable to shift the harmonic bed skillfully (i.e they've never learned to write songs like these guys have)
I HAVE learned to write songs too - but being able to create music like this is another skillset n inspiration entirely i've been thinking..Its much more about intuitively interacting n being able to weave seamlessly with other musicians to create something MORE than just "the song",,,Maybe if i met the right musicians and spent 5-10 years working to improve my guitar skills...
Anyways..This is fabulous atmospheric music..I added 2 other ace tracks to my stations 'Does She ? ' and 'Space Time' but everything on their page is just real quality and worth checking out
Thanx so much for the inspiration guys..Always a pleasure to find music i can resonate with :)

You like something/someone and then you find something else that you like and it's really by the same people - I love when that happens .... I have a favorite incense that was no longer available and then I found another just as good and found out it was made by the same people at a new company.
And that's kind of a good comparison to this sound - a beautiful scent of smoke. The soul of this song connects to how Alice was enticed down the rabbit hole. The sound is so beguiling. The harmonies are delicious and there's that little twangy single note guitar (can't describe it any better haha) that just appears like a little twinkly light here and there. Plus the lyrics are real poetry, just another universal way to lure you in.
Total connection to a world we know and prefer, but often lose our way to, and long for - terrible grammar I know, but sort of stream of consciousness to match the mood here.
Nice work unearthing this one, Steve - a really precious gem :)

I have a signed copy of this album which I received as soon as it was finished and I was not disappointed! It's a really interesting and pleasurable album all round. You've picked a great track to feature and it's a tribute to all the hard work that went into putting this lovely album together.

Wow. So nice to have some ears turned that way. We thought we'd made a new sound there, and then it just dropped like a stone. My wife loves the album. That's the whole thing posted there in order, but have always wanted to send you a copy, Steve.
That song there is a trip. Want to mention Matt Perez is the other musician, and he plays drums. He's pretty creative.
In a way that album is about us trying to trip each other out.

Tom/Bob...Nice one guys-Of course i'd love a copy of the album ! Will pm you Tom with my address..I def know a few people who'd really dig it for sure - and will try to turn them onto it (have already linked this track to a couple of friends on FB )
The 'sunk like a stone' must've been so dispiriting n disillusioning after you've created something beautiful with so much love...But timeless music is timeless music...So its not the end of the albumsd life by any means..
Just might take a while longer for people to be turned on by it ;)
